Does a Medical Office Assistant role qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies if your school's program curriculum directly encompasses the duties you'll perform, such as patient scheduling, medical records management, insurance verification, or clinical coordination. Your DSO evaluates the job description against your enrolled coursework, not just your program title. A generic administrative role at a non-medical employer typically won't meet the integral-part standard, but a position at a physician's office, urgent care clinic, or hospital outpatient department usually does.
How do I find Medical Office Assistant employers who hire F-1 CPT students?
Search Medical Office Assistant listings on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with work-authorization hiring history so you can prioritize outreach accordingly. When you contact HR, ask directly whether the practice has onboarded F-1 students on CPT before and whether they're enrolled in E-Verify. Smaller independent clinics are sometimes unfamiliar with CPT paperwork, so framing CPT as employer-cost-free work authorization typically moves the conversation forward.
Can I work full-time as a Medical Office Assistant on CPT during my academic semester?
You can work full-time on CPT during a semester only if your program explicitly allows it and your DSO authorizes it on your I-20. Many health sciences programs restrict full-time CPT to summer or co-op terms to avoid academic load conflicts. Full-time CPT for 12 or more cumulative months eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so confirm the hours and duration carefully with your DSO before accepting a full-time offer during the academic year.
What documents do I need to start a Medical Office Assistant CPT job?
You need a CPT-endorsed I-20 showing the specific employer, start date, and end date, plus a valid F-1 visa stamp and a current I-94 showing F-1 status. Your employer will complete Form I-9 using your I-20 and foreign passport; you don't receive a separate EAD card for CPT. Bring the offer letter and your CPT-endorsed I-20 to your first day since HR will need both to complete the I-9 correctly.
Does CPT work as a Medical Office Assistant count toward clinical hour requirements for medical assisting certification?
CPT hours can count toward externship or practicum requirements in accredited medical assisting programs, but the certifying body determines eligibility, not USCIS. Programs accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES typically require supervised clinical hours at an approved site. Confirm with your program director that your CPT employer meets the accreditation body's site standards before starting, since hours logged at a non-approved site won't satisfy certification prerequisites even if CPT authorization was valid.
