Which healthcare roles qualify for CPT authorization?
Any healthcare position that is an integral, required part of your degree program can qualify. Common examples include clinical rotations, health informatics placements, public health practicums, medical coding internships, and hospital administration co-ops. The role must be listed in your program's curriculum requirements, and your DSO must confirm it fits before you start work.
Does full-time CPT in healthcare affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. If you use 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you become ineligible for OPT after graduation. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, does not count against your OPT. Many F-1 students in healthcare intentionally structure rotations as part-time or limit full-time CPT to fewer than 12 cumulative months to preserve post-graduation work authorization.
Can I do CPT at a hospital that doesn't typically hire international students?
You can, but the employer must be willing to complete the paperwork your school requires for CPT authorization and must be able to verify your employment eligibility through E-Verify or Form I-9. Some smaller clinics and private practices are unfamiliar with the process. Hospitals and large health systems that already participate in E-Verify are generally faster to onboard CPT students.
How do I find healthcare employers open to CPT students?
Migrate Mate lists healthcare roles from employers with documented work-authorization filing history, which is a reliable signal that a site understands international student onboarding. Your university's career services office and clinical education coordinator often maintain a list of approved or preferred CPT sites as well. Combining both sources gives you the broadest set of vetted options.
Does CPT in healthcare count toward future H-1B sponsorship?
CPT itself doesn't create any H-1B visa sponsorship obligation or advantage. What it does is give you verifiable U.S. clinical or administrative experience, which healthcare employers value when evaluating candidates for full-time roles that would require H-1B sponsorship after graduation. USCIS treats each H-1B visa petition independently, so your CPT history doesn't carry over but your demonstrated U.S. experience does.
