Get Access To All JobsFamily Counselor CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Family Counselor internship qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the internship is directly tied to your degree program and your school lists counseling practicum or field placement as a curriculum requirement. Your DSO will need a written offer letter specifying your role, supervisor credentials, hours, and start and end dates. Generic internship descriptions that don't map to a course or degree requirement won't qualify for CPT authorization.
Can I do part-time CPT as a Family Counselor while taking classes full-time?
Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't count against your 12-month full-time CPT limit, which means it won't affect your OPT eligibility. Many counseling programs structure practica as part-time placements alongside coursework. Confirm the weekly hour limit with your DSO before signing any employment agreement, since exceeding 20 hours shifts your authorization to full-time CPT status.
Do Family Counselor CPT employers need to file anything with USCIS?
No. CPT is authorized entirely through your school, not through USCIS. Your employer doesn't file a petition or pay any government fees. The authorization lives on your I-20, which your DSO updates. Your employer is responsible for completing Form I-9 and verifying your EAD or I-20 with the CPT authorization dates, but there's no separate USCIS filing required.
How do I find Family Counselor employers who will sponsor me after CPT ends?
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers with a documented history of filing H-1B visa or other work visa petitions for counseling roles. Targeting employers who have sponsored before is the most reliable way to convert a CPT placement into long-term work authorization. Ask directly during the interview whether the organization has sponsored international employees and what their typical timeline looks like after OPT.
What happens if my Family Counselor CPT placement ends before my authorized end date?
Contact your DSO immediately if your placement ends early. Continuing to receive pay or perform work after your CPT authorization end date, or working at a site not listed on your I-20, violates your F-1 status regardless of what your employer says. Your DSO can issue a corrected I-20 for an early end date, but you must stop work first and request the update before any gap becomes a status violation.
