Get Access To All JobsRadiologic Tech CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does radiologic tech work qualify as CPT for F-1 students?
Yes, if your academic program requires clinical imaging experience as part of the curriculum. Your DSO must determine that the radiologic tech role is an integral part of your degree, not just loosely related. Programs in radiologic sciences, health sciences, or diagnostic imaging typically qualify, but your DSO makes the final call on each specific position.
Can I do CPT at an outpatient imaging center instead of a hospital?
Yes. Outpatient imaging centers, urgent care clinics, and specialty practices all qualify as CPT sites as long as the work aligns with your curriculum and your DSO authorizes the specific employer. Some F-1 students find outpatient sites more flexible with scheduling than large hospital systems, which can help when balancing coursework.
How do I find radiologic tech employers who regularly hire CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to identify imaging employers with a track record of hiring F-1 students on work authorization. Focusing on sites that are already familiar with CPT paperwork reduces back-and-forth with HR. You can also ask your program's clinical coordinator for a list of affiliated sites that have hosted students before.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Twelve months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, does not count against OPT no matter how many semesters you use it. If your radiologic tech CPT is full-time, track your cumulative months carefully and discuss the tradeoff with your DSO before exceeding 12 months.
What documents does a radiologic tech CPT employer typically need from me?
Bring your current I-20 with the CPT authorization page listing that employer by name, your valid F-1 visa stamp, and your passport. Many clinical sites also require your I-94 arrival record for I-9 verification. Some hospital HR departments additionally ask for proof of enrollment in the semester the CPT covers. Have certified copies of any required clinical certifications ready as well.
