- For OT fieldwork rotations this is a 12-week internship consisting of 40 hours per week beginning in January and running for 12 consecutive weeks. The start date is flexible.
- For OTA fieldwork rotations this is an 8 week internship consisting of 40 hours per week beginning in January and running for 8 consecutive weeks. The start date is flexible.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Current student of an accredited Occupational Therapy Institution
- OT students are Master’s or Doctoral degree level and OTA students are Associates degree level
- Student must be enrolled at an academic Institution that has an existing contract with Sheppard Pratt.
- Students applying to this rotation will need a strong foundation in child/adolescent mental health theory and related OT theory and practice, clinical reasoning, foundations of evidence-based practice, group theory and application, and teaching/learning concepts and applications related to staff, client, and caregiver education.
Learning Model:
Occupational therapy is part of the continuum of care and collaborates with the multidisciplinary team. Supervision is provided in a 1:1 supervision model by a licensed occupational therapist who is on-site daily. Both group and individual OT services are offered to all clients, with typically 2-3 OT groups each day and 1:1 sessions, and assessment as deemed appropriate.
Student Expectations:
Student expectations include self-directed learning; independently seeking learning opportunities and feedback, flexible thinking and adaptability. Readiness to learn from all experiences. Patience and compassion when working with this challenging patient population.

Does every OT fieldwork placement qualify for CPT authorization?
Not automatically. CPT applies only when the placement is an integral, required part of your degree program. Elective or extracurricular clinical hours don't qualify. Your DSO will verify that the OT setting and job duties map to a specific course or program requirement before issuing the updated I-20 needed to start work.
Can I do CPT at an OT private practice or outpatient clinic, or only at hospital systems?
CPT is available at any employer type your program approves, including private practices, outpatient clinics, school districts, and skilled nursing facilities. The setting matters less than whether your program formally recognizes it as qualifying fieldwork. Confirm with your academic fieldwork coordinator before your DSO submits the authorization.
How do I find OT employers who have experience hiring F-1 CPT students?

What happens to my CPT authorization if my OT fieldwork site changes mid-rotation?
Any change to your employer name, worksite address, or schedule requires a new I-20 update from your DSO before the change takes effect. Working at an unauthorized site, even briefly, violates your F-1 status. Contact your DSO as soon as a site change is confirmed and allow processing time before your first day at the new location.
Does completing OT fieldwork on CPT count toward NBCOT eligibility or state licensure hours?
CPT authorization from USCIS and your school is a work authorization question, separate from the clinical hours requirements set by NBCOT or your state licensing board. Most accredited Level II fieldwork placements do count toward NBCOT eligibility, but you must verify hours documentation requirements with your program director and the relevant state occupational therapy board independently.
