Get Access To All JobsHealthcare Assistant CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Healthcare Assistant job qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies if the role is directly tied to a required or elective course in your program, such as a clinical practicum, health sciences internship, or patient care fieldwork component. Your DSO will evaluate whether the specific duties listed in the offer letter, not just the job title, fulfill an integral curricular requirement. Roles involving administrative tasks only may not meet the standard.
Can I work as a Healthcare Assistant on CPT before I finish my degree?
Yes, CPT is available before graduation and can be part-time or full-time depending on your program's requirements. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not affect your OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT entitlement entirely, so discuss the hours with your DSO before accepting a full-time offer.
How do I find Healthcare Assistant employers who understand CPT authorization?
Migrate Mate lists Healthcare Assistant positions at employers with verified CPT and F-1 work authorization experience, so you can focus on facilities that won't require you to walk their HR team through the authorization process from scratch. Filtering for CPT-familiar employers reduces the risk of an offer falling through after your DSO has already updated your I-20.
What documents does a Healthcare Assistant employer need for CPT?
Your employer needs a copy of your CPT-endorsed I-20, which shows the authorized employer name, position, and dates. Some facilities also request your current F-1 visa, passport, and I-94 arrival record for their E-Verify or onboarding process. USCIS does not require employers to file any petition for CPT, so the documentation is handled entirely through your school and your I-20.
Can I switch Healthcare Assistant employers mid-semester on CPT?
Each CPT authorization is employer-specific and tied to the dates on your I-20. If you change employers or accept a second position, your DSO must issue a new or updated I-20 authorizing the new employer before you begin work there. Working at an unauthorized employer, even briefly, is a status violation. Start the DSO update process as soon as you have a confirmed offer from the new facility.
