Get Access To All JobsNursing Assistant CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Nursing Assistant role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your enrolled healthcare or allied health program lists direct patient care or clinical practicum as a required component. Your DSO reviews the job description and confirms whether the duties align with your curriculum. Roles in acute care, long-term care, and assisted living typically qualify, but your school makes the final determination, not the employer.
Can I work as a Nursing Assistant on CPT without a state CNA certification?
Most states require a Certified Nursing Assistant credential to work in licensed facilities, and employers won't hire without it regardless of your F-1 status. If you're still completing the training component of your program, confirm with your DSO whether a pre-certification practicum placement qualifies as CPT or falls under a different school-supervised clinical arrangement.
How do I find Nursing Assistant employers who understand CPT authorization?
Many smaller clinics and private home-care agencies are unfamiliar with F-1 CPT paperwork, which creates onboarding delays. Migrate Mate lists Nursing Assistant positions at employers with prior work-authorization experience, so you can focus outreach on facilities already comfortable with the process rather than educating HR from scratch.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the facility changes my shift schedule or supervisor?
CPT authorization is tied to the specific employer and terms listed on your I-20. A significant change in hours, location, or role duties may require your DSO to issue a new or amended I-20 before the change takes effect. Contact your DSO immediately when any material employment terms shift, and don't work under the new conditions until the update is confirmed.
Does completing CPT as a Nursing Assistant affect my ability to apply for OPT later?
Part-time CPT, meaning fewer than 20 hours per week, does not affect OPT eligibility regardless of how long you complete it. Full-time CPT authorized for 12 months or more eliminates OPT eligibility entirely. Track your authorized hours carefully across each semester and discuss cumulative totals with your DSO before accepting any full-time clinical placement.
