Get Access To All JobsCertified Medical Dosimetrist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Certified Medical Dosimetrist work qualify as CPT?
Yes, provided your school's program explicitly includes clinical dosimetry training in the curriculum. CPT authorization requires a direct academic connection, so your graduate program in medical dosimetry or radiation therapy must document how treatment planning rotations or QA assignments fulfill degree requirements. Your DSO reviews that connection before authorizing CPT on your I-20.
Can I do CPT at a freestanding radiation oncology clinic or only at hospital systems?
CPT is authorized based on the academic relationship between the work and your curriculum, not the employer's institutional type. Freestanding clinics, physician-owned practices, and independent cancer centers all qualify as long as the clinical duties align with your program and your DSO approves the site. Confirm that the employer can provide a supervising CMD or licensed therapist as your clinical supervisor.
How do I find dosimetry employers open to CPT students?
Start with Migrate Mate, which filters for employers with documented student work authorization history in clinical and healthcare roles. From there, contact the medical physics or radiation oncology department directly rather than going through general HR. Dosimetry programs often have existing affiliations with clinical sites, so check your program's affiliated training sites list before searching externally.
Will doing CPT in a dosimetry role affect my OPT or STEM OPT later?
Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility, so track your CPT duration carefully. Part-time CPT, or full-time CPT under 12 cumulative months, does not affect OPT. If you plan to pursue STEM OPT after graduation, keep total full-time CPT under 12 months and confirm your employer is enrolled in E-Verify before your OPT start date.
What credentials do I need before starting a CPT dosimetry role?
Most clinical dosimetry CPT positions require you to be enrolled in or have completed core coursework in treatment planning systems, radiobiology, and radiation physics. The American Association of Medical Dosimetrists requires a medical dosimetry degree from a CAMPEP-accredited program to sit for the CMD exam, so your CPT experience typically counts toward clinical hours if the site is CAMPEP-affiliated. Confirm credential timelines with your program director before accepting an offer.
