Get Access To All JobsNP CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as an NP on CPT before I finish my graduate nursing program?
Yes, if your program designates supervised clinical practice as a required curricular component rather than an elective. Most DNP and MSN-NP programs build clinical rotations directly into degree requirements, which makes those placements CPT-eligible. Your DSO verifies this alignment and issues the CPT authorization on your I-20. Elective or optional practicums typically don't qualify.
Does my NP clinical site need to meet any federal requirements for CPT?
The site itself doesn't require federal approval, but the position must be integral to your curriculum and listed on a CPT-authorized I-20. If you'll eventually transition to STEM OPT, confirm the employer is enrolled in E-Verify before you start. USCIS checks E-Verify enrollment when you apply for a STEM OPT extension, not retroactively.
How do I find NP employers who are prepared to support my CPT work authorization?
Search on Migrate Mate, which shows health systems and outpatient groups with verified DOL filing history for NP and advanced practice roles. Employers who've previously filed Labor Condition Applications for this occupation already understand prevailing-wage requirements and are more likely to have HR processes that accommodate semester-bound CPT authorization timelines.
What happens to my CPT if I change clinical sites or take a gap between rotations?
Each change of employer or site requires a new CPT authorization on a revised I-20 from your DSO. You can't carry one employer's CPT over to a different clinical site. Any gap between CPT periods where you work without a valid I-20 authorization constitutes unauthorized employment, which can terminate your F-1 status and reset your OPT eligibility clock.
Does using more than 12 months of full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility as an NP student?
Yes. If you accumulate more than 12 months of full-time CPT, you lose eligibility for OPT entirely under federal regulations. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, doesn't count toward that cap regardless of duration. Most NP programs structure rotations as part-time to preserve OPT eligibility, but confirm the classification with your DSO before each authorization.
