Get Access To All JobsMedical Technologist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Medical Technologist CPT role need to match my exact major?
Your DSO must confirm the work is an integral part of your curriculum, so the position's duties need to map to coursework in your enrolled program. A clinical laboratory science or medical technology degree aligns directly. If your major is biology or biochemistry, you'll need a faculty letter or course description showing the lab work supports your degree requirements specifically.
Can I do CPT at a reference lab like Quest or LabCorp, or only at hospitals?
CPT authorization isn't limited to hospital settings. Reference labs, public health labs, research institutions, and physician office labs all qualify as long as your school approves the site and the duties connect to your curriculum. The key variable is whether your DSO accepts that employer type, not the employer's size or sector. Confirm your school's site approval process before accepting an offer.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my lab rotates me to a different department?
Your CPT I-20 authorization is tied to the specific employer and, in many cases, the specific role or department listed. If the lab reassigns you to a different specialty, like moving from hematology to microbiology, check with your DSO about whether a new CPT authorization is needed. Some schools require an updated I-20 for any material change in duties or location.
How do I find Medical Technologist employers who are experienced with CPT students?
Search on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with verified DOL filing history for clinical lab roles. Employers who've filed Labor Condition Applications for H-1B visa or PERM for Medical Technologists are generally familiar with work authorization paperwork and less likely to withdraw an offer when they see your CPT employment authorization document.
Does completing CPT as a Medical Technologist affect my STEM OPT eligibility later?
CPT itself doesn't affect STEM OPT eligibility, but the duration of full-time CPT matters. Accumulating 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, including the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Medical technology programs classified under CIP codes tied to STEM designations do qualify for STEM OPT, so tracking your full-time CPT months against that threshold is critical before you accept a full-time position.
