Does RN Staff Nurse work qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your nursing program explicitly requires clinical work experience as part of the degree curriculum. Your DSO reviews the role description against your program requirements before issuing CPT authorization on your I-20. Generic hospital jobs don't automatically qualify. The placement must be tied to a specific course or practicum requirement your school recognizes.
Can I work as an RN on CPT before passing the NCLEX?
CPT authorization covers your F-1 work eligibility, but state nursing boards control whether you can practice as an RN. Most states allow graduate nurses to work under a temporary permit while waiting for NCLEX results. You'll need both the CPT authorization from your DSO and the temporary practice permit from your state board before your first shift.
How do I find hospitals that understand CPT authorization for nursing students?
Search Migrate Mate for RN Staff Nurse roles filtered by CPT-experienced employers. Many hospitals in large health systems have established processes for F-1 nursing students and designated HR contacts who understand DSO paperwork. Starting with employers who have prior CPT experience cuts down on onboarding delays caused by unfamiliarity with the authorization process.
What documents does my employer need to keep on file for my CPT?
Your employer needs a copy of your I-20 showing the CPT authorization with the correct employer name, start date, and end date. They'll also run an E-Verify check using your EAD or I-20 as the work authorization document. Make sure the employer name on your I-20 matches the legal entity name your HR department uses, not just the hospital's brand name.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my clinical rotation gets extended?
Your CPT authorization is tied to the specific dates on your I-20. If the hospital extends your rotation beyond the authorized end date, you must return to your DSO for a new I-20 before continuing to work. Working even one day past your CPT end date is an unauthorized employment violation, so build the extension request into your timeline before the original period expires.
