CPT Cancer Registrar Jobs
Cancer Registrar CPT positions let F-1 students apply oncology data management coursework in hospital tumor registries, cancer centers, and health systems. Your DSO must authorize CPT before your start date, and the role must directly integrate with your degree program. Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) exam eligibility requires documented work experience, making CPT hours count twice.

Does a Cancer Registrar role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if it directly integrates with your degree program in health information management, public health, or a related field. Your DSO evaluates whether the duties, specifically oncology data abstraction, registry compliance, or cancer surveillance, connect to your coursework. Roles limited to administrative tasks without clinical data components may not meet the integral curriculum requirement.
Can CPT hours in a cancer registry count toward CTR exam eligibility?
They can, but only if your duties involve direct data abstraction and case-finding in a facility that reports to a recognized cancer registry. The National Cancer Registrars Association specifies the type and volume of experience required. Keep detailed records of your abstraction hours and case volume separately from your general employment documentation.
How do I find Cancer Registrar employers who sponsor F-1 students?
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers with LCA filing history in health information and cancer registry occupations. Employers who've filed LCAs previously understand the sponsorship process and are more likely to support CPT students through to H-1B visa. Targeting these employers reduces the time you spend educating HR about F-1 work authorization basics.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my cancer registry internship ends early?
CPT authorization is tied to a specific employer and date range on your I-20. If the internship ends before the authorized end date, you must stop working immediately and notify your DSO. Working beyond the employer relationship, even within the authorized dates, violates your F-1 status. Get a new CPT authorization before starting with any replacement employer.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more during your program eliminates your post-completion OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT has no impact on OPT. Most cancer registry internships structured for credit can be managed as part-time, under 20 hours per week, preserving your full 12 months of OPT for post-graduation employment.
