Does a Licensed Prosthetist role qualify for CPT?
It depends on whether the work is an integral part of your curriculum. If your degree program requires clinical hours, supervised patient fittings, or a practicum in prosthetics and orthotics, a prosthetist role at an accredited clinic or hospital system can qualify. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific program requirements, not the job title alone.
Can I work at a VA facility on CPT as a prosthetist?
VA facilities do hire prosthetists and have employed F-1 students in clinical training roles, but federal employment rules add a layer of complexity. Some VA positions require U.S. citizenship, while others are open to non-citizens with valid work authorization. Confirm the specific position's citizenship requirements directly with the facility's HR team before your DSO issues CPT authorization.
What documents do I need to show an employer for CPT work authorization?
You'll need your I-20 with the CPT authorization section completed, showing your employer's name, the authorized start and end dates, and whether the authorization is full-time or part-time. Employers completing Form I-9 will accept your I-20 and foreign passport together as a List A combination. Your DSO must authorize each employer separately, so a single I-20 doesn't cover multiple clinical sites.
How do I find Licensed Prosthetist employers open to CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to find O&P employers and hospital systems that have hired F-1 workers before. Practices affiliated with university health systems or ACPOC-accredited training programs are often familiar with CPT requirements. Reaching out to the clinic's practice manager rather than going through general HR channels tends to move faster for clinical placement conversations.
Does full-time CPT affect my post-graduation OPT eligibility?
Yes. Twelve months or more of full-time CPT authorization eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely under USCIS regulations. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not count against OPT regardless of how long it runs. If your prosthetist rotation is full-time, track your cumulative authorized days carefully and plan your post-graduation work authorization strategy with your DSO well before you hit the 12-month mark.
