Clinic Director CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Clinic Director role qualify for CPT?
It can, but the role must be an integral part of your degree curriculum, not just related to your field. Programs in healthcare administration, public health, physical therapy, and behavioral science commonly authorize CPT for management-level clinical roles. Your DSO makes the final determination based on how the position maps to your specific program requirements.
Can I do CPT as a Clinic Director if my degree is in a non-clinical field?
Yes, if the management and operations components of the role align with your curriculum. Students in health services administration, business with a healthcare concentration, or organizational leadership programs have successfully authorized CPT for Clinic Director positions. The connection must be documented and approved by your DSO before you begin work.
How do I find Clinic Director employers who understand CPT authorization?
Migrate Mate lets you filter healthcare employer listings by sponsorship and LCA filing history, which helps you identify organizations already familiar with work authorization processes for international employees. Employers with prior F-1 hires are more likely to cooperate with your DSO's CPT documentation requirements without delays.
What happens to my OPT if I work full-time as a Clinic Director on CPT?
Full-time CPT lasting 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. If you plan to use OPT after graduation, keep your CPT engagement part-time, which USCIS defines as fewer than 20 hours per week. Confirm the weekly hours in your offer letter and your CPT authorization document before you start.
Can my CPT Clinic Director role count toward H-1B specialty occupation requirements?
CPT work experience in a supervisory clinical role can strengthen an H-1B visa petition if the duties align with a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. USCIS evaluates each petition independently, so the job duties description in any future I-129 filing must clearly reflect the professional-level responsibilities you performed.
