Get Access To All JobsHealth Information Technology CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Health Information Technology work qualify as CPT?
It qualifies if the role is an integral part of your curriculum and your school has established that health informatics, HIM, or clinical data work connects directly to your program requirements. Roles involving EHR management, medical coding, clinical data analysis, or health data governance typically satisfy this standard. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific program and the employer's job description.
Can I do CPT at a telehealth company or a remote-first healthcare employer?
Yes. CPT authorization is tied to an employer and role, not a physical work location. Remote Health Information Technology positions at telehealth platforms, health IT vendors, or payer organizations qualify as long as the work aligns with your curriculum and your DSO approves the specific position. Document your job duties carefully since DSOs often require more detail for remote or non-traditional healthcare settings.
How do I find Health Information Technology employers who hire CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to identify healthcare organizations and health IT companies with a track record of sponsoring international students. Prioritize employers in health systems, payer organizations, and health data companies, which regularly bring on HIT interns through CPT. Cross-reference with E-Verify enrollment to confirm the employer can complete your I-9 verification on time.
Does full-time CPT in Health Information Technology affect my OPT eligibility?
Twelve or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your post-completion OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, doesn't count against OPT regardless of how long it runs. If your HIT internship is full-time, track your total full-time CPT days carefully and discuss the tradeoff with your DSO before committing to extended engagements.
What should my offer letter include for the DSO to authorize CPT in this field?
Your offer letter needs the employer's legal name, your specific start and end dates, a description of your duties referencing health IT functions such as clinical data management, coding audits, or EHR implementation support, and confirmation that the role is paid or unpaid. Vague letters listing only a job title frequently cause DSO delays. Ask the employer's HR team to include at least three specific duty statements before you submit your CPT request.
