Adult Mental Health Rehabilitative Services (ARMHS) Practitioners teach and instruct individuals with qualifying mental health diagnoses behavioral skills to assist them in increasing their capacity for independent living and improve their quality of life. Successful ARMHS services result in individuals improved emotional and mental health to regain or maintain their stable functioning.
CSSM values its staff and offers a supportive, team-oriented work environment which provides employees opportunities to learn and expand their base of knowledge and skills.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Create, review, and update Functional Assessments and Individual Treatment Plans
- Provide skills training sessions to clients in the home or community settings
- Documentation of service provision and collateral contacts
- Coordination of care with client’s care team
- Participate in individual supervision and ARMHS program meetings
- Complete ongoing continuing education
- Maintain consistent scheduling with clients across CSSM’s service area
Some areas of focus within ARMHS include but are not limited to: Communication/social skills, community resource utilization, symptom management and relapse prevention, budgeting and healthy lifestyle practices, household management, and employment-related skills.

Does a Mental Health Technician role qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies if your school's DSO confirms the position is an integral part of your enrolled curriculum. For students in clinical psychology, social work, counseling, or psychiatric nursing programs, direct patient-care roles typically meet that standard. Your program coordinator or advisor should document which specific course or clinical requirement the position satisfies before your DSO issues the CPT authorization.
Can I work full-time as a Mental Health Technician on CPT?
Yes, but full-time CPT carries a significant consequence: any cumulative full-time CPT use of 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. If you plan to use OPT after graduation, part-time CPT, or limiting full-time CPT to under 12 months, protects that benefit. Discuss the tradeoff with your DSO before accepting a full-time schedule.
What documents does a Mental Health Technician employer need for CPT onboarding?
Your employer's HR team will need your current I-20 with the CPT authorization page listing the employer name, position, start date, and end date, plus your valid F-1 visa and passport for I-9 verification. If the employer is E-Verify enrolled, the I-9 process is completed electronically. Some behavioral health employers also request a DSO contact for verification, so have that ready.
How do I find Mental Health Technician employers that support F-1 students?
Search Migrate Mate to filter for employers with documented work authorization sponsorship history in healthcare and behavioral health. Employers who have previously filed LCAs or supported OPT extensions are more likely to have HR processes in place for onboarding international students on CPT. Psychiatric hospitals, VA-affiliated facilities, and community mental health centers with high patient volume tend to hire on a rolling basis.
Does CPT experience as a Mental Health Technician count toward state licensure hours?
It can, but each state licensing board sets its own rules on whether supervised hours earned during CPT qualify toward licensure requirements. You'll need to confirm that your on-site supervisor holds the appropriate credentials, that the supervision ratio meets your state board's standard, and that the facility type is approved. Request a supervision agreement in writing before your start date and keep detailed logs of all hours worked.
