Get Access To All JobsAthletic Trainer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Athletic Trainer CPT count as part-time or full-time, and does it matter?
It depends on your school's curriculum structure and how many hours the position requires. Part-time CPT is 20 hours or fewer per week and does not affect your OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT entitlement entirely, so confirming the classification with your DSO before accepting any offer is essential.
Can I do CPT at a professional sports team or is it limited to collegiate settings?
CPT is not limited to collegiate settings. Professional teams, outpatient orthopedic clinics, hospital sports medicine departments, and even military or performing arts organizations can serve as CPT sites, provided the work is an integral part of your enrolled coursework and your DSO approves the specific employer and role.
How do I find Athletic Trainer positions where the employer understands CPT authorization?
Migrate Mate lets you filter for employers with documented F-1 hiring history so you're targeting sites already familiar with student work authorization. CAATE-accredited clinical education programs are also a reliable pipeline since those employers have existing agreements with accredited institutions and expect to host student clinicians.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my Athletic Trainer position changes duties or supervisor mid-placement?
Any material change to your CPT placement, including a shift in job duties, supervising certified athletic trainer, or employer location, requires you to return to your DSO for a revised I-20. Continuing work under outdated CPT authorization as if nothing changed creates a status violation, so notify your DSO in writing as soon as any change is confirmed.
Is a BOC certification required before I can start CPT as an Athletic Trainer?
CPT does not require you to hold the Board of Certification credential before you begin. Most CPT placements are completed as part of the supervised clinical hours leading up to BOC eligibility. Your supervising certified athletic trainer carries the professional licensure responsibility during your placement, though some states regulate what student clinicians may perform independently.
