Get Access To All JobsPediatric Nurse Practitioner CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a pediatric clinical rotation automatically count as CPT?
Not automatically. Your school must designate the rotation as an integral part of your curriculum and authorize it as CPT on your I-20 before you start. The placement agreement between your program and the clinical site is typically required documentation. If the rotation is a graduation requirement, most DSOs will approve it, but the process still requires your explicit request and their written authorization.
Can I do CPT at a private pediatric practice instead of a hospital?
Yes. Private pediatric practices, multispecialty children's clinics, and community health centers all qualify as CPT sites as long as the work is directly tied to your NP program's curriculum requirements. The employer must be willing to sign any affiliation agreement your school requires. Smaller practices are sometimes more flexible on scheduling but may have less familiarity with F-1 CPT paperwork, so plan to walk them through the process.
How do I find pediatric NP employers who already understand CPT authorization?
Migrate Mate is the most direct option for F-1 students, since it surfaces employers with documented CPT and OPT hiring history in nursing and clinical roles. Children's hospitals affiliated with academic medical centers are also strong targets, as they regularly host NP students and have established processes for I-20 authorization and affiliation agreements.
Will doing CPT during my NP program affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Full-time CPT used for one year or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, regardless of duration, does not affect OPT. Most NP clinical rotations are structured as part-time CPT even when the hours feel substantial, but confirm the full-time versus part-time classification with your DSO on every I-20 authorization to avoid an unintentional impact on your post-graduation work authorization.
What happens if my pediatric NP clinical site changes mid-rotation?
You must stop working at the original site and notify your DSO immediately. A new CPT authorization reflecting the new employer must be issued on an updated I-20 before you begin at the replacement site. Working at an unauthorized location, even temporarily, is a CPT violation. Build in at least one to two weeks for your school's processing time when a site change is anticipated.
