Get Access To All JobsDental Assistant CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Dental Assistant jobs qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your dental assisting or health sciences program formally requires clinical or externship hours as part of the curriculum. Your DSO must confirm the position is integral to your coursework, and the employer's written job description must align with the training objectives listed in your program requirements. Elective or self-arranged work placements typically don't qualify.
Can I work full-time as a Dental Assistant on CPT?
Full-time CPT is permitted but comes with a significant consequence: if you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT across your entire F-1 enrollment, you lose all OPT eligibility after graduation, per USCIS policy. Part-time CPT, which is fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't affect OPT. Dental programs with year-long externships should plan accordingly with their DSO.
What documents does a dental practice need from me for CPT?
You'll need to provide your current I-20 with the CPT authorization endorsement, your F-1 visa, and your passport. The practice will use these to complete the I-9 employment eligibility verification. Some practices enrolled in E-Verify will also run an electronic check. Bring a copy of your DSO's authorization letter in case the office manager needs to confirm the CPT terms.
How do I find dental practices that have hired CPT students before?
Search Migrate Mate to identify dental employers with a documented history of filing work authorizations for clinical and dental assisting roles. Practices already familiar with international student onboarding move faster through the hiring process and are less likely to back out after learning you need CPT authorization. Your school's career center may also maintain a list of approved clinical sites.
Does CPT as a Dental Assistant count toward state licensure or DANB certification hours?
It depends on your state's dental board and the DANB pathway you're pursuing. Many states accept supervised CPT clinical hours toward the hands-on experience requirement, but the supervision must be documented by a licensed dentist or dental hygienist. Request a written training agreement from your employer at the start of your CPT placement that specifies your supervisor's credentials and the procedures you'll be performing.
