Get Access To All JobsMedical Writer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Medical Writer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your academic program includes coursework in scientific writing, regulatory affairs, biomedical communication, or a related discipline. Your DSO evaluates whether the specific job duties, not just the job title, connect to your enrolled curriculum. Roles at pharma companies, CROs, medical communications agencies, and academic medical centers have qualified, provided the employer's written description maps to your program requirements.
Can I do CPT as a Medical Writer while still in my final semester?
Yes, and this is the most common timing. CPT is available before graduation as long as you remain enrolled full-time (or meet your program's part-time CPT exception) and your DSO authorizes the position on your I-20. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, doesn't affect your OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more eliminates your OPT, so track your cumulative CPT hours carefully.
What documents do Medical Writer employers typically need for CPT hires?
At minimum, you'll provide your CPT-authorized I-20 showing the employer name, position, and authorization dates, plus your valid F-1 visa stamp and passport. Most employers also request your EAD equivalent confirmation from your school. For E-Verify-enrolled employers, they'll run Form I-9 verification on your first day using your I-20 and passport, so bring originals, not copies.
How do I find Medical Writer employers that hire CPT students?
Search on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with verified Labor Condition Application filing history for scientific and regulatory writing roles. Employers who have previously filed LCAs for Medical Writers understand work authorization requirements and are more likely to have an onboarding process that accommodates CPT. You can filter by role type and location to narrow to employers actively hiring in your area or remotely.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my Medical Writer role switches from on-site to remote after I start?
A location or schedule change requires a CPT amendment on your I-20. Your DSO must issue an updated authorization reflecting the new work location before you begin working under the changed arrangement. If the employer switches you to a fully remote role based in a different state, your DSO needs to know because the authorized I-20 must match your actual work site for E-Verify and DOL compliance purposes.
