Get Access To All JobsHospitalist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a hospitalist CPT placement need to be at a single hospital for the full authorization period?
Not necessarily, but each site must be individually authorized on your I-20. If your rotation moves between facilities within a health system, your DSO needs to list each distinct site. A blanket authorization for a health system is not sufficient unless USCIS and your school's SEVIS record reflect each specific training location.
Can I work night shifts or overnight calls on CPT as a hospitalist trainee?
Yes. CPT authorization covers the hours required by the clinical role, including overnight call. Your I-20 authorization doesn't specify shift hours. What matters is that the total weekly hours match what your DSO authorized, whether full-time or part-time, and that the work remains integral to your curriculum throughout.
How do I find hospitalist employers who regularly hire F-1 CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for hospitalist roles filtered by employers with active H-1B visa and J-1 visa waiver filing history. Hospitals that have sponsored international physicians before are far more likely to have HR processes in place for CPT documentation, I-20 verification, and E-Verify enrollment than institutions with no international hire history.
Does completing a hospitalist CPT rotation strengthen a future H-1B petition for a physician role?
It can. A documented clinical rotation at a hospital establishes an employment relationship and shows USCIS that the position meets specialty occupation requirements. Hospitalist roles are generally supported under O*NET's high job-zone classification for physicians, which reinforces the specialty occupation argument in an H-1B petition later filed by the same or a new employer.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the hospital delays my start date after my I-20 is already updated?
Your DSO must issue a corrected I-20 reflecting the new start date. Working even one day outside the authorized dates on your I-20 violates your F-1 status. Contact your DSO immediately when a start date shifts, and don't report to the hospital until the updated I-20 is in hand and the new dates are confirmed in SEVIS.
