CPT Clinical Social Work Jobs
Clinical social work CPT positions let F-1 students complete supervised client-facing hours that most state licensure boards require before you can sit for the LCSW exam. Your DSO must authorize each CPT placement individually, and the work must be tied directly to your degree program's field practicum requirements.

Job Description
The University of Nevada, Reno Counseling Services is recruiting for a full-time, 40-hour per week Post-Master’s Clinical Social Work Intern. Under the supervision of a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, the Clinical Social Work Intern (CSW-Intern) will provide a full range of mental health services to university students. The Clinical Social Work Intern will receive a comprehensive training experience in university counseling services, including individual and group psychotherapy, same-day sessions, crisis interventions, outreach, and consultation services to university students.
The majority of this work is accomplished via one-to-one clinical contact with students, but consultation and/or outreach services may be extended to faculty, campus organizations, and other professional members of the community. Careful attention is paid to opportunities to ensure sufficient clinical hours are available, so the CSW-Intern can meet the LCSW requirements set forth by the State of Nevada Board of Examiners for Social Workers. Clinical Social Work Interns receive a minimum of 60 minutes of individual supervision per week and have access to didactic training seminars.
The start date is August 1, 2026, and the position will continue for three years, or the applicable end date, dependent on the candidate’s board registration as an intern.
Required Qualifications
- Applicants must hold a Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from a Graduate School of Social Work program accredited by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE) or equivalent accrediting body.
- Applicants must pass the appropriate examination given by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) and must be licensed at the LMSW level in Nevada by the start of the internship.
- Candidates must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must not currently hold an LCSW license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Candidates having experience working in a clinical setting with university student or emerging adult populations are encouraged to apply.
- The preferred candidate would have experience providing counseling services to underserved populations and should have interest in serving members from diverse groups.
Compensation Grade-Letter of Appointment
$50,000 with a salary increase for the second year, third year, and after LCSW licensure is obtained.

Does clinical social work CPT count toward LCSW supervised hours?
It depends on your state licensing board's rules. Most boards accept hours earned under a licensed clinical supervisor, regardless of your immigration status or work authorization type. Your CPT placement must document the supervising LCSW's license number and your weekly direct-contact hours. Confirm the board's specific requirements in writing before starting the placement so there are no gaps in your hour log.
Can I do full-time CPT as a clinical social work student?
Yes, but full-time CPT, defined as 20 or more hours per week, affects your OPT eligibility. Each academic year in which you use full-time CPT reduces your post-graduation OPT by one year. If you use full-time CPT for 12 or more months total, you lose all OPT eligibility. Part-time CPT, under 20 hours per week, has no effect on OPT, so most MSW students structure their field placements accordingly.
What documents do I need before starting a CPT clinical placement?
You need a new or updated I-20 with the CPT endorsement showing the specific employer name, work location, and authorized dates. Your DSO issues this only after your program formally approves the placement as a curriculum requirement. Bring the endorsed I-20 and your current visa documentation to your first day. Starting before the I-20 is issued, even by one day, constitutes unauthorized employment.
How do I find clinical social work employers who understand CPT?
Migrate Mate lists clinical social work roles at employers with documented sponsorship and work-authorization experience. Beyond the job board, target hospital systems, federally qualified health centers, and university counseling programs, as these organizations routinely supervise practicum students and have established onboarding processes for international students on CPT authorization.
Can my CPT clinical placement lead to H-1B sponsorship after graduation?
A CPT placement can lead to full-time employment and eventual H-1B visa sponsorship, but the two processes are separate. Clinical social work roles typically qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS standards because they require at minimum a master's degree in social work. Your employer would need to file a Labor Condition Application with DOL and then petition USCIS during the annual H-1B visa registration period.
