Get Access To All JobsTravel Registered Nurse CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does each travel nursing assignment require a separate CPT authorization?
Yes. CPT authorization is tied to a specific employer and placement, not to a staffing agency in general. Each time your assignment location or employer of record changes, your DSO must issue an updated I-20 reflecting the new CPT details. Starting a new hospital contract before your school updates your I-20 means working without valid CPT authorization, which creates an unauthorized employment violation on your record.
Can I work through a staffing agency on CPT as a travel RN?
Yes, and most travel RN placements work exactly this way. The staffing agency is your employer of record for CPT purposes. Your DSO will list the agency on your I-20, not the hospital where you work. Confirm the agency is enrolled in E-Verify and can document F-1 CPT authorization correctly before you sign a contract, since not all travel nursing agencies have processed F-1 students before.
How do I find travel nursing employers who accept F-1 CPT students?
Many travel nursing staffing agencies aren't familiar with F-1 CPT requirements, which slows down onboarding significantly. Migrate Mate lets you search employers with documented F-1 hiring history, so you can identify agencies that have already navigated CPT paperwork. From there, confirm directly with the recruiter that the agency's HR team can verify CPT work authorization through E-Verify before your first shift.
Does my travel nursing CPT count toward OPT if I plan to stay after graduation?
Part-time CPT does not affect OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Most travel RN contracts involve full-time hours, so track your cumulative full-time CPT carefully. If you're close to the 12-month threshold before graduation, discuss the timing with your DSO before accepting another full-time assignment.
What clinical documentation does my school need to authorize CPT for travel nursing?
Your DSO typically requires a formal offer letter stating the employer name, location, job title, start and end dates, and weekly hours. Some schools also require a letter from your academic department confirming the assignment is integral to your nursing program, not just supplementary clinical experience. Check with your DSO early because documentation requirements vary by institution, and gathering materials from a travel nursing recruiter can take several business days.
