Does a Surgical Dental Assistant role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your dental assisting or dental hygiene program includes a required clinical practicum or externship component. The surgical assisting work must be an integral part of your curriculum, not elective. Your DSO evaluates whether the specific employer and role meet that standard before issuing a CPT-authorized I-20. Hospital-based oral surgery departments and periodontics practices typically satisfy this requirement more clearly than general dentistry offices.
Can I work in multiple surgical specialties under one CPT authorization?
No. CPT authorization is employer-specific and tied to the job description your DSO approves. If you rotate from an oral surgery practice to a periodontics clinic, your DSO must issue a new CPT-authorized I-20 for the second employer before you begin. Working at a non-authorized employer, even temporarily, violates your F-1 status.
How do I find Surgical Dental Assistant employers who are familiar with CPT hiring?
Most solo dental practitioners have never hired an F-1 student on CPT and may decline without understanding the process. Multi-location oral surgery groups and hospital-affiliated dental departments have dedicated HR staff more likely to have handled I-9 verification for CPT students before. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with F-1 hiring history in clinical support roles, which narrows your search to practices that won't need a lengthy explanation of your work authorization.
What documents does a Surgical Dental Assistant employer need from me for CPT?
Your employer needs your current CPT-authorized I-20 showing the employer name, start and end dates, and authorization type, plus your valid F-1 visa and passport for Form I-9. Some oral surgery practices also request your dental radiography certificate and proof of completed infection control training before your first day. Having all of these ready before your offer stage prevents delays in clearance for surgical environments, which often require credentialing in addition to I-9 completion.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my clinical rotation ends early?
Your CPT authorization is valid only through the end date printed on your I-20. If the employer ends your rotation early, you must stop working immediately regardless of the original schedule. Notify your DSO right away so your SEVIS record stays accurate. Starting a new CPT-authorized position requires a fresh I-20, so contact your DSO before accepting any follow-on offer.
