Does CNA work qualify as CPT for F-1 students?
Yes, CNA work qualifies for CPT if your nursing or health sciences program requires direct patient care as an integral part of your curriculum. Your DSO will verify that the job description maps to your enrolled coursework. Positions in long-term care facilities, hospital med-surg units, and home health agencies have all been approved for CPT, provided the clinical work is tied to a specific course or practicum requirement.
Can I work full-time as a CNA on CPT?
Full-time CPT, defined as 20 or more hours per week, is allowed but carries a significant consequence: one year of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Most DSOs recommend part-time CPT, under 20 hours per week, for CNA students who want to preserve post-graduation OPT. Confirm your planned hours with your DSO before accepting a full-time CNA offer.
What documents do I need to start a CNA job on CPT?
You need a CPT-authorized I-20 showing the specific employer name, your state CNA certification, and a valid EAD is not required for CPT since authorization is embedded in your I-20. Your employer will verify your work authorization through Form I-9, where you present your I-20 and passport or another accepted document. Some facilities also require a background check and proof of immunizations before your start date.
Where can I find healthcare employers willing to hire F-1 CPT students?
Migrate Mate lists CNA-relevant positions at employers with experience hiring international students on CPT. Many healthcare facilities accept CPT students for clinical roles but don't advertise it prominently, so searching through a platform that tracks employer hiring patterns saves significant time. Nursing homes and federally qualified health centers tend to have more streamlined CPT onboarding than large hospital systems.
Can I switch CNA employers while on CPT?
Yes, but each new employer requires a new CPT authorization from your DSO and a new employer-specific entry on your I-20. You cannot begin working at the new facility until your updated I-20 is issued. Give your DSO as much lead time as possible, typically one to two weeks, and get a formal offer letter from the new employer before requesting the amendment.
