Get Access To All JobsRegional Medical Director CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Regional Medical Director role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role is directly tied to a required practicum, capstone, or field experience in your degree program. Graduate programs in public health, healthcare administration, or medicine most commonly authorize CPT for medical director positions. Your DSO must confirm the academic connection and issue the CPT authorization on your I-20 before you begin work.
Can I do CPT as a Regional Medical Director while completing a part-time graduate program?
CPT is available to part-time students only under specific conditions, and most schools restrict it to full-time enrollment. If your program is structured as part-time, confirm with your DSO whether your school's CPT policy permits authorization. Some schools require you to be enrolled in at least a minimum credit load tied to the CPT experience itself.
How do I find healthcare employers open to CPT students at the director level?
Director-level CPT placements require employers who understand that the role serves an educational purpose, not just an operational one. Search Migrate Mate to identify health systems with a history of sponsoring or hiring international medical professionals. Filtering by employers with active LCA filings for medical leadership roles narrows your list to organizations already familiar with work authorization requirements.
What happens to my CPT status if the Regional Medical Director role shifts to a different location or department mid-authorization?
CPT is authorized for a specific employer, location, and job description as listed on your I-20. If the role changes significantly, such as a different region or expanded scope, you need a new CPT authorization from your DSO before the change takes effect. Working under an outdated CPT authorization can jeopardize your F-1 status, so notify your DSO of any material changes immediately.
Does using CPT for a Regional Medical Director role affect my OPT eligibility later?
Twelve months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation, track your CPT duration carefully. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, does not count toward that 12-month threshold regardless of how long you work in the role.
