Does RBT work qualify as CPT for an F-1 student?
RBT work qualifies for CPT if it's an integral part of your curriculum, your school offers a program in applied behavior analysis, psychology, or a related field, and your DSO authorizes the specific placement before you begin. The role's supervised fieldwork component typically satisfies the academic integration requirement, but your DSO makes the final determination based on your program's requirements.
Can I work as an RBT on CPT without holding a BACB certification?
Many ABA clinics require you to complete BACB's 40-hour training and pass the RBT competency assessment before your first client session, regardless of your CPT status. CPT authorizes your work, but the BACB credential gates your ability to deliver direct services. Starting the training during your academic semester, before CPT begins, is the most common way F-1 students clear this requirement on time.
How do I find RBT employers who are comfortable hiring F-1 CPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you filter employers by their DOL Labor Condition Application filing history, which shows which clinics and healthcare organizations have sponsored international employees in similar roles. ABA clinics affiliated with school districts or university research programs are also strong targets because they regularly work with students on academic placements and understand DSO authorization paperwork.
Does part-time RBT work on CPT affect my OPT eligibility later?
Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not reduce your OPT eligibility no matter how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT at 20 or more hours per week reduces OPT eligibility by one year for each 12-month period used. If you're planning on OPT or STEM OPT after graduation, confirm your weekly hours with your DSO before your employer sets your schedule.
What documentation does an ABA clinic need to hire me on CPT?
Your employer needs your CPT-endorsed I-20, which lists the specific employer, start and end dates, and whether the authorization is part-time or full-time. They'll also need your passport and visa. You're not required to have an EAD card for CPT. Some E-Verify-enrolled employers may ask your DSO for a verification letter confirming the CPT authorization, which your school's international student office can usually provide within a few business days.
