Get Access To All JobsPatient Registrar CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Patient Registrar job qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your degree program in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, Business, or a related field includes a practicum, internship, or cooperative education component. Your DSO must confirm the role is an integral part of your curriculum. Administrative roles that involve patient intake, insurance verification, and EHR data entry typically satisfy that requirement for healthcare-focused programs.
Can I work as a Patient Registrar at a private clinic on CPT?
Yes, CPT is not restricted to large healthcare systems. Private clinics, outpatient surgery centers, and specialty practices all qualify as CPT employers as long as your school authorizes the specific placement. Smaller employers may not be familiar with CPT, so clarify upfront that no USCIS filing is required from them and that your I-20 is the authorization document.
How do I find Patient Registrar jobs that accept CPT students?
Migrate Mate filters for employers who have hired international students before, which reduces the time spent on employers who aren't set up for work authorization. Look specifically for hospital systems and multi-site health networks, since their HR teams handle F-1 authorization routinely and are less likely to withdraw an offer over paperwork concerns.
What documents do I need to start a Patient Registrar role on CPT?
You need a CPT-endorsed I-20 that lists your employer's name, work location, start and end dates, and authorized hours per week. Your employer will also need a copy for their I-9 records. Some healthcare employers additionally require proof of your enrollment status for compliance purposes. Get your I-20 updated before your start date, not after.
Does working full-time as a Patient Registrar on CPT affect my OPT?
Yes, if you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not count against your OPT regardless of how long it runs. If this role is a full-time summer placement, track your cumulative full-time CPT across all employers and all semesters.
