Get Access To All JobsNurse Anesthetist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does CPT work as a nurse anesthetist count toward NBCRNA certification hours?
Yes, provided your program has structured the rotation as a required clinical component and your DSO has authorized the specific employer on your I-20. Most accredited nurse anesthesia programs design CPT rotations to fulfill supervised anesthesia hours required for NBCRNA certification eligibility. Confirm with your program director that the CPT site meets their clinical hour documentation requirements before the rotation begins.
Can I do CPT at a freestanding ambulatory surgery center instead of a hospital?
CPT is permitted at any employer your DSO approves and your program designates as an integral curricular site, including ambulatory surgery centers. The key restriction is that the site must provide the level of supervised clinical experience your program requires. Some programs limit CPT to accredited hospital settings, so verify with your DSO and program coordinator before committing to a freestanding center.
How do I find nurse anesthetist employers who regularly hire F-1 students on CPT?
Search Migrate Mate to filter for nurse anesthetist roles at employers with a documented history of filing Labor Condition Applications. Hospitals that have previously sponsored work visas for CRNAs are more likely to have HR teams familiar with CPT authorization paperwork and post-graduation H-1B visa transitions, which reduces friction when you approach them for a clinical rotation.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Full-time CPT for one year or more eliminates your post-completion OPT eligibility entirely, per USCIS regulations. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, does not affect OPT. Since most CRNA programs run two to three years of clinical rotations, confirm with your DSO how your program's CPT structure is classified before accumulating 12 months of full-time authorization.
What happens if my nurse anesthesia program extends and my CPT authorization expires mid-rotation?
Working past your CPT end date, even by a day, constitutes unauthorized employment and creates an F-1 status violation. If your program extends, contact your DSO immediately to get an updated I-20 with the new CPT end date before you continue working. Most CRNA programs that extend clinical timelines are accustomed to issuing amended CPT authorizations, but you must initiate the update.
