Get Access To All JobsMedical Laboratory Technician CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Medical Laboratory Technician role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the position directly relates to your enrolled program, such as an MLT, clinical laboratory science, or allied health degree. The work must be an integral part of your curriculum, meaning your DSO must be able to document how the lab duties connect to specific coursework or program requirements. Generic lab assistant roles that don't align with your degree field won't qualify.
Can I do full-time CPT as an MLT student without affecting OPT?
You can, but full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Most F-1 students in MLT programs use part-time CPT during the academic year and reserve full-time CPT for a single summer semester to stay under that threshold. Talk to your DSO before accepting a full-time offer so you understand the long-term trade-off.
How do I find Medical Laboratory Technician employers who hire CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for Medical Laboratory Technician roles and filter by employers with F-1 hiring history. Hospital systems, reference laboratories, and public health labs are the most common CPT sponsors in this field. Target employers that have filed Labor Condition Applications for laboratory roles in the past, since that history signals familiarity with international work authorization requirements.
What documents does my employer need to process my CPT onboarding?
Your employer needs your I-20 with the CPT authorization page listing their specific company name, your F-1 visa, your passport, and your I-94 arrival record. The I-20 must be endorsed before your first day of work, and the employer name on the CPT authorization must exactly match the legal entity name on your offer letter. Any mismatch can delay your E-Verify completion.
Does CPT as a Medical Laboratory Technician count toward future H-1B eligibility?
CPT work experience counts as qualifying employment history for an H-1B visa petition. If your MLT role involves duties that meet the specialty occupation standard, your employer can later file an H-1B on your behalf using that experience. The O*NET profile for Medical Laboratory Technicians classifies the occupation at Job Zone 3, so you'll need to confirm the specific degree requirement with a prospective H-1B employer and USCIS guidance.
