Get Access To All JobsPT CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a PT clinical rotation automatically qualify for CPT authorization?
Not automatically. Your school must classify the rotation as an integral part of your curriculum, meaning it connects to a specific required course, not just an elective or enrichment placement. Your DSO reviews the offer letter, employer details, and course linkage before issuing CPT authorization on your I-20. Placements that aren't tied to a required course won't qualify, even if your program director approves them informally.
Can I work at more than one PT site on CPT at the same time?
Yes, concurrent CPT is allowed if each site is authorized separately on your I-20 and each placement ties to a distinct required course or curricular component. Your DSO must update your I-20 for every employer, so you'll need a separate authorization for each site. Working at a second location without separate CPT authorization on your I-20 violates your F-1 status, even if both placements are at affiliated clinical partners.
Will full-time CPT in a PT role affect my future OPT eligibility?
Twelve months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, does not count toward that limit regardless of how many semesters you use it. If you're planning post-graduation OPT, track your full-time CPT hours carefully across all authorized placements, not just your current semester.
How do I find PT employers that already understand CPT documentation requirements?
Migrate Mate lists PT job opportunities from employers with established work-authorization processes, so you can identify practices and health systems that won't require you to educate HR about F-1 CPT from scratch. You can also check whether a prospective employer is enrolled in E-Verify before you apply, which signals they have existing infrastructure for verifying EADs and CPT authorization documents.
What happens if my CPT authorization dates don't cover my full employment period at the PT clinic?
Working even one day outside your authorized CPT dates is an F-1 status violation. If your placement extends beyond the dates on your I-20, you must request a CPT extension from your DSO before the current authorization expires, not after. Bring a revised offer letter or extension agreement from your employer showing the new end date so your DSO can update your I-20 in time.
