PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Head Sports Performance Coach
- Serve as a Sports Performance Coach for Luther College Athletics with sport assignments designated by the Director of Athletics;
- Provide leadership and oversight for football sports performance programming while assisting with the development and implementation of strength and conditioning programs for additional assigned sports;
- Design, implement, and evaluate sport-specific and individualized strength, conditioning, speed, agility, and injury prevention programs that support student-athlete development and competitive success;
- Collaborate with head coaches to align sports performance programming with team goals, competitive expectations, and student-athlete needs;
- Assist in achieving departmental goals related to student-athlete performance, retention, health and wellness, and competitive excellence;
- Monitor, evaluate, and maintain data related to student-athlete performance and program effectiveness;
- Collaborate with athletic training staff and other campus partners to support injury prevention, rehabilitation, return-to-play protocols, and overall student-athlete well-being;
- Provide instruction and education regarding proper lifting techniques, movement patterns, recovery strategies, nutrition, and performance enhancement practices;
- Assist in the supervision and scheduling of strength and conditioning activities to maximize facility utilization and student-athlete access;
- Demonstrate professionalism and engagement in professional development activities, including remaining current with strength and conditioning best practices, sport science research, and NCAA Division III trends;
- Adhere to the rules, policies, and regulations established by Luther College, the NCAA, and applicable professional organizations;
- Demonstrate a commitment to the mission, philosophy, and goals of Luther College and the Athletics Department;
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
Assistant Director of Legends Fitness
- Assist with the daily operation and administration of the Legends Fitness Center;
- Collaborate with the Director of Legends to create and maintain a safe, welcoming, and clean environment for students, student-athletes, employees, and community members;
- Assist with development, implementation, communication, and enforcement of facility policies, procedures, and risk management practices;
- Assist with facility scheduling, equipment maintenance, and operational planning;
- Assist with supervision, scheduling, training, and evaluation of student employees;
- Support budget planning, purchasing, inventory management, and other operational functions of the Legends Fitness Center;
- Assist with special events, programming initiatives, membership services, and departmental projects as assigned;
- Collaborate with campus partners and athletics staff to enhance the overall user experience within the Legends Fitness Center;
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Legends Fitness Center and/or Director of Athletics.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and SKILLS
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred in Exercise Science, Strength and Conditioning, Kinesiology, Sport Science, or a related field;
- Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or equivalent nationally recognized certification required;
- CPR, AED, and First Aid certification required or ability to obtain upon hire;
- One to three years of collegiate strength and conditioning experience preferred;
- Experience designing and implementing sports performance programs for multiple sports preferred;
- Experience with sports performance technology, athlete management systems, and strength and conditioning software preferred;
- Strong organizational, communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills;
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends of the college.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
May require exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as noise, extreme temperatures, and other distractions while working in indoor and outdoor settings. Substantial interaction with people is required, and consistently demonstrating a positive and cooperative attitude is essential. May require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving equipment and supplies up to 50 pounds. Position responsibilities require early morning, evening, and weekend work, as well as periodic travel.
