INTRODUCTION
As the Associate Director of Philanthropy, you will qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donor prospects, focusing on individuals, corporations, and foundations. While you will primarily support the MNDK (MN, ND, SD) Chapter, we collaborate frequently with colleagues across the globe to implement direct asks that maximize overall giving to the Conservancy.
As the Associate Director of Philanthropy, you will be responsible for building and managing a portfolio of 75-125 qualified donors, including donors with the capacity to give over $100,000. You will have an annual fundraising goal of $750,000 or more, along with a target for bequest/planned giving commitments. To reach these goals, you will conduct 75-125 donor visits and 225-375 donor moves each year, as well as making phone calls to qualify and disqualify prospects.
You will be expected to understand and apply complex principles of developing donor strategies in your work. You will also share information about the Conservancy’s mission, vision, and priorities in broad terms and encourage donors to make flexible gifts. You will listen for gifts of assets or other non-cash gift opportunities, such as planned gifts and trade lands, and be required to use the Conservancy’s donor database and develop funding proposals in partnership with our team’s donor communication specialist.
This position requires working in a hybrid environment (2 days in our Minneapolis office and 3 days remote). The preferred candidate is based in the Twin Cities area with an ability to travel across Minnesota as needed for donor visits. You can expect additional travel in North Dakota, South Dakota, and outside of our chapter for TNC field trips and training opportunities and may need to work overtime as needed. All travel combined would be roughly 2-3 weeks per year. The position allows for some flexible hours for work-life balance. The work environment may involve infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.

Tips for Your Director Of Philanthropy Job Search
Quantify your fundraising portfolio results
Directors of philanthropy are evaluated on dollars raised, not effort. Your resume should show specific campaign outcomes, donor portfolio growth, and year-over-year results without generic language like 'led successful fundraising efforts' doing the heavy lifting.
Tailor your pitch to the mission
Hiring committees at nonprofits and foundations screen hard for authentic mission alignment. Before applying, research the organization's strategic plan and reflect genuine connection to their cause in your cover letter, not a boilerplate statement about a passion for giving back.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists director of philanthropy openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Highlight your major gifts experience clearly
Many postings require a defined major gifts threshold, often at the six-figure level. State the gift range you've cultivated and closed directly on your resume so screeners don't have to guess whether your experience matches their donor portfolio.
Prepare a portfolio of stewardship strategies
Interviewers frequently ask how you retain major donors between campaigns. Arrive with concrete examples of stewardship plans you built, including touchpoints, recognition practices, and how you moved lapsed donors back into active giving cycles.
Negotiate more than base compensation
Many philanthropy director roles carry performance incentives tied to fundraising goals, plus professional development budgets for AFP membership or CFRE exam fees. These are often negotiable and worth raising before you accept an offer.
Director Of Philanthropy Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most director of philanthropys?
The companies hiring the most director of philanthropys right now include University Of Louisville, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and Florida Tech, with the largest share of openings in Kentucky, Florida, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Openings are concentrated at health systems, universities, and large community foundations with active capital campaigns.
How many director of philanthropy jobs are remote?
About 10% of director of philanthropy openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though many postings require proximity to a donor base or regular in-person cultivation events. Roles focused on planned giving and digital fundraising strategy tend to offer the most location flexibility compared to major gifts positions that depend on face-to-face relationship building.
How do you become a director of philanthropy?
Most directors of philanthropy move up through frontline fundraising roles such as development associate, major gifts officer, or annual fund manager, building a donor portfolio and closing gifts over several years. Earning a CFRE credential and gaining campaign leadership experience significantly strengthens your candidacy. Strong mentorship from senior development professionals and active involvement in AFP chapters also accelerates advancement into director-level roles.
Can you get hired as a director of philanthropy with little experience?
Breaking in at the director level with limited development experience is difficult, but candidates from adjacent fields can make a compelling case. Attorneys with estate planning backgrounds transition well into planned giving roles. Marketing professionals with donor communications experience are valued at smaller nonprofits. Leading a volunteer fundraising committee or managing a modest annual fund campaign gives you concrete results to reference in interviews.
What does the director of philanthropy interview process look like?
Most organizations start with a phone or video screen focused on your fundraising philosophy and mission fit, followed by a panel interview with the development team, executive director, and sometimes board members. Finalists are often asked to present a sample major gifts strategy or respond to a donor cultivation scenario. Reference checks with former supervisors and board colleagues are standard before an offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to director of philanthropy jobs?
You can find and apply to director of philanthropy jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from nonprofits, healthcare systems, higher education institutions, and foundations across the United States.
