JOB OVERVIEW
Center Manager, Neurology/Medical Center/Center for Functional and Molecular Imaging (CFMI) – Georgetown University.
This is a leadership position with three principal components: managing the FMRI shared resource center’s operation, directly interfacing with principal investigators (PIs) to develop new imaging protocols and adjusting sequence parameters to meet their needs, supervising and training the 3-4 research technicians who operate the 3.0T MRI scanner. This position also manages the tracking of the utilization of the MRI scanner and preparation of monthly billing based on said utilization; working with labs to adjudicate any discrepancies in the billing; and directly interfacing with the center’s business manager to ensure timely billing via the Georgetown Management System (GMS). Interfacing with various labs that use the FMRI includes overseeing data transfer; providing help and support such as technological troubleshooting; and performing analysis and quality control of data collected for various projects.
Another major component of this position is full knowledge of the operation of the MRI scanner and training of the research technicians. This would also include operation of the MRI scanner when there are staffing issues due to the research technicians taking planned or unplanned PTO. The Center Manager also is the point of contact (POC) with the Siemens service engineers, including identification of artifacts or scanner malfunction that necessitate immediate service. The Center Manager also interfaces with Siemens to schedule preventative services and helium fills. Additional responsibilities include implementation of the center’s safety procedures and ensuring adherence to these protocols, which includes setting up and supervising implementation of training protocols and monitoring compliance.
The Center Manager is also involved in the various ongoing research being directly undertaken for the center’s own research grants. This includes implementing and conducting advanced statistical analyses including hierarchical regression and multi-voxel pattern analyses of the research studies underway in the lab, and managing all of the junior research technicians. In addition, the occupant of this position will need to have strong technical skills to implement quality control procedures, and set up a real-time fMRI statistical analysis system. This position also will instruct graduate students that either rotate in the lab or as part of the data acquisition components of two graduate level courses: NSCI-6003 and NSCI-6009.
This position requires working with sensitive populations including those with neurodevelopmental issues (e.g., autism), Alzheimer’s disease patients, stroke patients, and children. This position requires excellent communication and leadership skills. When opportunities to troubleshoot technical laboratory instruments arise, the candidate should identify the problem and suggest expert solutions to the problem at hand. The candidate needs to be able to properly configure MR spectroscopy experiments, correctly identify MRI acquisition tilts to optimally measure certain cerebral structures, such as but not limited to, hippocampal, orbital frontal cortex, and olfactory bulb. The candidate should have a solid understanding of MRI physics and maintenance of the machine as well as MRI spectroscopy.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
- Manage the scheduling of the research team and the utilization of the MRI scanner
- Track scanner utilization and generation of monthly billing
- Manage a team of research technicians in the operation of the fMRI core facility
- Develop new MRI imaging protocols for investigators
- Perform and oversee the advanced MRI data analysis procedures
- Oversee the weekly and monthly quality assurance
- Train new research technicians
- Instruct graduate students
WORK INTERACTIONS
The success of the CFMI completely depends on the individual in this position being able to effectively lead a team of research technicians in the operation of this complicated MRI scanner, working with researchers from other labs, assisting them when they encounter problems, and making sure the wide-range of participants being scanned feel comfortable. Thus, a combination of highly technical and interpersonal skills is required. The candidate should also have excellent management and communication skills. Successful candidates will mentor, schedule, and manage all of the junior Research Technicians (currently there are 3 Research Technicians) as well as provide support for graduate students and interns. This individual will report to the Director of the CFMI, Dr. VanMeter.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- A Master’s is preferred though a Bachelor's degree, and 3 or more years of experience, or equivalent relevant work experience; e.g., each year of work experience may be substituted for each year of education required.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship in Laboratory Supervisor
Translate your Australian credentials for U.S. employers
A three-year Australian bachelor's degree in science or a related field is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree for E-3 visa purposes. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before your first interview to remove any employer hesitation upfront.
Target labs with active DOL LCA filing history
Search the DOL's Office of Foreign Labor Certification disclosure data to identify employers who have filed LCAs for Laboratory Supervisor or related titles. Prior LCA filings signal that the employer already understands the E-3 sponsorship process and won't stall at the paperwork stage.
Find E-3 sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork once you have an offer. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with E-3 sponsorship history for lab roles, so your job search skips the time lost on employers unfamiliar with the visa.
Clarify specialty occupation status for supervisory lab roles
Some Laboratory Supervisor positions emphasize managerial duties over technical ones, which can complicate E-3 specialty occupation eligibility. Frame your role around hands-on scientific responsibilities and ensure your job offer letter specifically ties the position to a degree requirement in a scientific field.
Ask your employer about LCA timing before accepting an offer
The employer must file a certified LCA with the DOL before you can apply for your E-3 visa. Confirm your prospective employer knows this step falls on them and ask about their internal HR timelines, since delays here directly push back your consulate appointment and start date.
Prepare a degree-to-role narrative for your visa interview
Consular officers assess whether your specific degree field connects directly to the Laboratory Supervisor role. Prepare a clear, one- to two-sentence explanation of how your qualification in chemistry, biology, or your relevant discipline is a prerequisite for the duties listed in your offer letter.
E-3 Visa Laboratory Supervisor: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Laboratory Supervisor jobs in the U.S. that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search for Laboratory Supervisor roles where employers are already open to E-3 sponsorship. Because the E-3 requires the employer to file an LCA with the DOL, targeting employers with prior LCA history for lab and scientific roles significantly improves your chances of reaching an offer without educating the hiring team about the visa from scratch.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Laboratory Supervisor role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3 visa?
Laboratory Supervisor roles typically qualify when the position requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in a specific scientific discipline such as chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory science. Roles that blend supervision with hands-on technical responsibilities are stronger candidates than positions framed primarily as people management. Your offer letter should explicitly state the degree requirement to support the E-3 application.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for Australian laboratory professionals?
The E-3 is available only to Australian citizens and has no lottery, so you can apply any time of year once you have a certified LCA and a job offer. The H-1B visa subjects most applicants to an annual lottery with no guarantee of selection. For Laboratory Supervisor roles, the E-3 is a faster and more predictable path, with two-year renewable periods and no cap on how many times you can renew.
Can I transfer my E-3 visa to a new laboratory employer if I change jobs?
Yes, but the process starts fresh with the new employer. They must file and receive a new certified LCA from the DOL before you can update your E-3 status. You'll also need a new visa stamp if yours has expired or if you travel internationally before the new employer's paperwork is complete. Coordinating the timing carefully avoids gaps in your work authorization.
