Position Overview
We are seeking an Electrical Controls Engineer to lead industrial electrical and automation projects from concept through commissioning. This role combines electrical power distribution design, controls engineering, project management, and client interaction. The engineer will be responsible for system design, PLC/HMI programming, cost estimating, commissioning, troubleshooting, and ongoing technical support for manufacturing and industrial facilities. The ideal candidate has experience designing industrial power systems and controls, managing multiple projects, and collaborating with clients and cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality solutions safely, on time, and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Design electrical power distribution, automation, and control systems for industrial and manufacturing facilities.
- Develop PLC, HMI, and SCADA applications and integrate control hardware.
- Create and review electrical drawings, schematics, specifications, and project documentation.
- Perform load calculations, voltage drop analysis, short circuit studies, and code compliance evaluations.
- Develop project budgets, estimates, schedules, and procurement plans.
- Lead projects from design through commissioning, startup, and ongoing support.
- Troubleshoot electrical and control system issues and implement corrective actions.
- Collaborate with clients, project managers, engineers, technicians, and contractors throughout project execution.
- Ensure compliance with NEC, IEEE, NFPA, UL, and applicable safety standards.
- Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to junior engineers and project teams.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives and identify opportunities for process optimization.
- Prepare project updates and technical reports for clients and management.
Must-Have Qualifications
- BSEE from an ABET-accredited university (or equivalent experience).
- 1+ years of experience designing and implementing industrial power distribution systems for manufacturing or industrial facilities.
- Experience with PLC programming, HMI development, and industrial control hardware.
- Working knowledge of NEC, IEEE, NFPA, and UL standards related to industrial electrical systems.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and PLC/HMI programming software.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Willingness to pursue Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
- Strong communication, leadership, and client-facing skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Arc Flash Risk Analysis experience.
- Experience with both industrial facility electrical design and controls/automation systems.
Additional Information
- Early-career candidates will be considered if they have relevant internship or co-op experience in industrial electrical engineering, controls, or power systems.
