Electrical Engineer Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an electrical engineer job in Chicago?
Focus your search on Chicago's dominant hiring sectors: utilities and energy infrastructure, industrial manufacturing along the I-55 corridor, and commercial construction in the Loop and Fulton Market. Candidates with power systems, PLC programming, or SCADA experience stand out locally. Networking through IEEE Chicago Section events and targeting firms tied to Chicago's ongoing transit and grid modernization projects gives you a concrete edge over purely online applicants.
Which companies hire electrical engineers in Chicago?
Companies currently hiring electrical engineers in Chicago include Sargent & Lundy, Burns & McDonnell, and Clayco, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's mix of Fortune 500 industrials, utility providers, and mid-size engineering consultancies means openings range from large infrastructure programs to specialized project-based roles.
Are there remote electrical engineer jobs in Chicago?
Yes, though opportunities are limited for hands-on roles requiring site visits, equipment testing, or lab work. About 39% of electrical engineer openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with most flexibility found in design, systems analysis, and project management functions. Chicago-area firms in power grid consulting and enterprise automation tend to offer the most hybrid arrangements.
How can I get an electrical engineer job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Chicago is through co-op or internship programs with the city's large utilities and industrial manufacturers, many of which convert strong performers to full-time roles. Entry-level titles like junior electrical engineer, electrical designer, or systems technician at Chicago engineering consultancies and building systems contractors are realistic starting points. Highlighting AutoCAD, Revit MEP, or any hands-on lab coursework makes candidates significantly more competitive for these roles locally.
Which industries hire the most electrical engineers in Chicago?
Chicago electrical engineer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Energy, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's role as a major Midwest transit hub, combined with its dense commercial real estate market and legacy industrial base, keeps demand steady across power distribution, building electrification, and advanced manufacturing.
