DESCRIPTION
Amazon Leo is an innovative program aiming to provide low-latency, high-speed internet to underserved populations across the globe through the deployment of a constellation of over 3000 satellites to Low Earth Orbit, and we're looking for an Industrial Engineer to support factory level industrial engineering projects.
As an Industrial Engineer for a Factory Team at Amazon Leo, you will be responsible for the analysis, solution definition, and continuous improvement of operational & industrial mechanisms & workflows at the site. You’ll be a key technical voice defining the layout of 90,000 sq ft factory environment, ensuring layouts are fit for future scaling as well as optimized around minimum material movement. You will serve as a key lynchpin connecting operations, engineering, and logistical functions to ensure solutions reduce waste, improve yield, and have the practical result of more reliable, cost effective, production processes. You will leverage your expertise in industrial engineering & operational research to lead data collection, analysis, and modeling activities for key site level requirements like direct labor sizing, end-to-end cycle time assessments, etc. You’ll solve complex industrial challenges associated with balancing production velocity, exceptional quality, and cost competitive production concepts while ensuring smooth technical execution of current production operations. You’ll be a champion for lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement projects, raising the bar on the quality of manufacturing solutions presented to the operations group.
Key job responsibilities
- Conceptualize, design, develop, and lead execution on work cell layouts throughout facility.
- Specify, lead, and develop analysis, and produce modeling, associated with labor, cycle time, headcount, and capex requirements for production processes.
- Contribute to development of standard ways of working across Kuiper for industrial engineering activities.
- Be a department subject matter expert in SAP ERP & MES systems.
- Collaborate on development, analyze, and optimize factory improvement roadmaps, ensuring best effort/impact projects are selected for the business.
- Participate in drafting & development of Standard Operating Procedures for Operations Team partners.
A day in the life
- 25% of your time will be spent on the shop floor, working with production teams to monitor, review, and improve industrial processes.
- 25% of time will be spent performing independent development work such as deep diving on available data sets to identify and implement key production improvement actions, developing industrial solution concepts, and reviewing & supporting technical content produced by manufacturing engineering team overall.
- 40% of time will be spent in meeting settings, collaborating with others on topics such as new process introductions, production process change management, production solution finding reviews, etc.
- 10% of time will be spent in mentorship settings with other engineers on the team, performing collaborative work & coaching to develop the team members skillsets, while ensuring common team execution to your technical vision.
About the team
The Amazon Leo SEA99 Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering Team supports the operations producing a number of critical sub-systems of the Amazon Leo Satellites, including the Battery, Propulsion System, and Optical-Inter-Satellite Link (OISL) Modules. The team has dozens of engineers from diverse backgrounds tackling some of the hardest problems in mass-manufacturing high performing Aerospace Hardware.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in capacity planning, operations planning, business analysis or equivalent
- Experience in process improvement/quality control tools and methods
- Advanced degree in one of the following fields: Industrial Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics OR equivalent experience
- 3+ years’ experience with SAP ERP system
- Experience with both low rate/NPI & full rate manufacturing processes
- Experience with developing, planning, and deploying work cell layouts in factory environment
- Familiarity with cleanroom operations
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Lean-Six Sigma Black Belt certification
- Experience with operations research concepts like Queueing theory, Transportation theory, etc.

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
