Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Business Office Manager
Frame your credentials around U.S. equivalency
Gather transcripts, employment letters, and professional certifications translated into English before outreach. Designated sponsors assess whether your business management background meets U.S. standards, so presenting comparable qualifications clearly speeds their DS-2019 eligibility review.
Target host employers with compliance infrastructure
Healthcare systems, university administrative offices, and mid-to-large nonprofits frequently host J-1 Trainees because they already have HR staff familiar with training plan obligations. Roles titled operations manager or administrative services manager at these organizations align well with the Trainee category.
Use Migrate Mate to filter roles by sponsorship alignment
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers actively posting Business Office Manager positions that signal openness to international candidates. Narrowing by industry and location helps you prioritize outreach before approaching a designated sponsor about DS-2019 issuance.
Build a detailed training plan before the offer stage
The J-1 Trainee category requires a structured Training or Internship Placement Plan covering specific learning objectives, supervision details, and measurable benchmarks. Draft this document with your prospective host employer early, because designated sponsors won't issue the DS-2019 until it's approved.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement upfront
Some J-1 Business Office Manager placements trigger the two-year home-country residency requirement, depending on funding source and country of nationality. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before signing any offer, since this affects whether you can later change to H-1B or apply for a green card.
Verify prevailing wage compliance using OFLC Wage Search
J-1 Trainees must receive compensation comparable to U.S. workers in the same role. Use OFLC Wage Search to confirm the host employer's offered rate meets DOL prevailing wage levels for your metropolitan area and occupation before your training plan is submitted.

Find Business Office Manager JobsBusiness Office Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Business Office Manager roles?
The J-1 Trainee category fits most Business Office Manager candidates who have a degree in business, finance, or a related field and fewer than five years of post-degree professional experience. Candidates with extensive management credentials and specialized expertise may qualify under the J-1 Specialist category instead. Your designated sponsor makes the final determination based on your background and the training plan your host employer submits.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa, the employer or a separate organization?
Your visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your host employer. Organizations like Cultural Vistas or AIPT issue the DS-2019 form and oversee program compliance. The company or institution where you work is the host, not the sponsor. You need both: a host employer willing to structure your role as a training placement and a designated sponsor organization to approve and issue your DS-2019.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 Business Office Manager?
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers posting Business Office Manager or related administrative leadership roles who are open to international candidates. Once you identify promising host employers, confirm their willingness to work with a designated sponsor and complete the required training plan documentation before moving forward with a formal offer.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect Business Office Manager J-1 holders?
It can. If your J-1 placement is funded by your home government or the U.S. government, or if your home country appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, you may be subject to the two-year requirement. This means you'd need to return home for two years, or obtain a waiver, before changing to H-1B status or applying for a green card. Confirm your situation with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
What documents does a designated sponsor require to issue a DS-2019 for this role?
Sponsors typically require a completed Training or Internship Placement Plan (Form DS-7002) signed by you and the host employer, proof of your educational credentials and work experience, evidence of health insurance meeting J-1 requirements, and a host employer agreement. For Business Office Manager placements, the training plan must detail specific administrative and managerial learning objectives, supervision arrangements, and evaluation checkpoints across the program duration.
