Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Faculty Position
Align your credentials with specialty occupation standards
J-1 Professor and Research Scholar categories require a degree directly related to your teaching or research field. Gather official transcripts, degree equivalency evaluations, and peer-reviewed publication records before approaching host institutions.
Target institutions with active DS-2019 issuance history
Search for Faculty Position openings on Migrate Mate to find U.S. universities and research institutions actively hosting J-1 exchange visitors, so you're not applying to employers unfamiliar with the program's requirements.
Distinguish Professor from Research Scholar category early
The Professor category fits teaching-focused appointments; Research Scholar fits those primarily conducting research. Mismatching your program category delays DS-2019 issuance, so clarify your primary duties with the host department before the designated sponsor files.
Check the two-year home residency requirement before accepting offers
Many Faculty Position J-1 holders from countries on the State Department's Skills List, or funded by their home government, face a two-year home residency requirement after their exchange ends. Confirm your eligibility status before signing an offer letter.
Request a training plan draft before the DS-2019 is issued
Designated sponsors including IIE and CIEE require a program plan outlining your exchange objectives, supervision structure, and evaluation schedule. Review this document with your host department chair before the sponsor finalizes it to avoid scope mismatches.
Understand repeat participation limits for Research Scholar status
J-1 Research Scholars who have previously participated in an exchange program must wait 24 months after their last J-1 status ends before a new DS-2019 can be issued. Confirm your participation history with the host institution's international office.

Find Faculty Position JobsFaculty Position J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Faculty Position roles?
Most faculty roles fall under the Professor or Research Scholar J-1 category. The Professor category is for individuals primarily teaching, lecturing, or observing at accredited institutions. Research Scholar applies when the appointment centers on independent research. Some short-term visiting faculty appointments qualify under the Short-Term Scholar category, which covers exchanges of six months or fewer.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a faculty member?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your host university directly. Organizations such as IIE, CIEE, or the host institution's own designated sponsor office issue your DS-2019 form and are responsible for compliance monitoring. The hiring university is your host employer but is distinct from the legal visa sponsor unless the university itself holds designated sponsor status.
How do I find Faculty Position roles where the host institution is already set up for J-1 hosting?
Use Migrate Mate to search Faculty Position openings filtered by J-1 sponsorship availability. Many universities that regularly host J-1 exchange visitors have established relationships with designated sponsor organizations, which shortens the DS-2019 issuance timeline and reduces the administrative burden on both you and the department making the hire.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect most faculty J-1 holders?
It affects a significant portion. The requirement applies if your home country appears on the State Department's Exchange Visitor Skills List, if your exchange was funded by your home government or a U.S. government agency, or if you are a medical graduate coming to teach or conduct research. You cannot change to most other visa categories or obtain a green card until the requirement is fulfilled or waived.
Can I extend my J-1 status if my faculty appointment is renewed?
Yes, extensions are possible within category limits. Research Scholars may hold J-1 status for up to five years in total; Professors have no fixed statutory maximum but extensions require the designated sponsor's approval and a continued qualifying program. Your host institution's international office coordinates the extension request with the designated sponsor, who then issues an updated DS-2019 reflecting the new program end date.
