Align your portfolio to specialty occupation standards
Full stack roles require demonstrated proficiency across both front-end and back-end systems. Before applying, structure your portfolio projects by technology stack so host employers can verify your training aligns with a formal J-1 training plan.
Confirm whether Intern or Trainee fits your situation
The J-1 Intern category is for current degree students or those who graduated within 12 months. If you graduated more than a year ago, only the Trainee category applies. Applying through the wrong category will cause your DS-2019 to be denied.
Search for J-1-aligned roles using Migrate Mate
Filter your full stack job search by companies with a history of hosting J-1 exchange visitors. Migrate Mate surfaces those roles so you spend less time cold-applying to employers unfamiliar with the designated sponsor model.
Request the training plan template early in negotiations
Your designated sponsor requires a completed DS-7002 training plan signed by the host employer before issuing the DS-2019. Raise this during the offer stage, not after signing, since some engineering managers are unfamiliar with the document.
Check whether your host employer uses E-Verify
Some designated sponsors require host companies to be enrolled in E-Verify before approving a J-1 placement. Confirm the employer's E-Verify status before the sponsor's compliance review begins to avoid delays that can push back your start date.
Understand the two-year home residency requirement before accepting
Full stack Trainees sponsored through certain government-funded programs may be subject to a two-year home residency requirement, which restricts H-1B and green card eligibility until fulfilled or waived. Clarify your program's funding source with your designated sponsor before signing.

Find Full Stack Application Development JobsFull Stack Application Development J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers full stack application development roles?
Most full stack positions fall under the J-1 Trainee category for professionals who graduated more than 12 months ago, or the Intern category for current students and recent graduates within 12 months of completing their degree. The host employer's structured training plan must directly relate to software engineering or application development. Your designated sponsor confirms which category applies based on your credentials and the role's technical scope.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a tech placement?
The visa sponsor is not your employer. A U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, issues your DS-2019 and serves as the legal sponsor. Your tech host company is the placement site. The employer agrees to host you and sign the DS-7002 training plan, but all compliance obligations run through the designated sponsor, not the hiring team.
How do I find U.S. tech companies that are open to J-1 host arrangements?
Start with Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles at employers familiar with the J-1 host model. Many smaller engineering teams have never hosted a J-1 exchange visitor and won't know how to coordinate with a designated sponsor, so targeting companies with prior international hiring experience significantly shortens your timeline from offer to DS-2019 issuance.
Can I switch host employers or projects after my J-1 begins?
A mid-program host change requires your designated sponsor's approval and usually a revised DS-7002 training plan. Changing employers without sponsor authorization violates your J-1 status. A project reassignment within the same employer is typically fine if your core training objectives remain intact, but notify your sponsor if your technology stack or job duties shift substantially from what the original plan described.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect full stack J-1 participants?
It can, depending on your home country and funding source. If your J-1 program is financed by your home government or a U.S. government agency, you'll likely be subject to the two-year rule under INA Section 212(e), which bars H-1B and immigrant visa applications until you return home for two years or obtain a waiver. Confirm your program's funding classification with your designated sponsor before accepting the offer.
