Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Security Software Engineer
Document your security specialization before applying
Gather certifications like OSCP, CEH, or CISSP alongside transcripts that show coursework in cryptography, network security, or systems programming. Designated sponsors evaluate whether your credentials align with the proposed training objectives before issuing a DS-2019.
Target host employers with active security teams
Focus on organizations running dedicated red team, AppSec, or cloud security functions. These teams generate structured training plans that satisfy the J-1 Trainee program's requirement for a formal, skills-based program rather than routine production work.
Search for J-1-aligned roles using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers whose Security Software Engineer openings align with J-1 host arrangements. Filtering by sponsorship type saves you from applying to roles where the employer has no familiarity with designated sponsor requirements.
Clarify the home residency requirement early
Some J-1 participants in technology fields face a two-year home-country residency requirement under INA Section 212(e). Confirm with your designated sponsor whether your situation triggers this requirement before accepting an offer, since it affects future H-1B or immigrant visa eligibility.
Align your training plan to OFLC Wage Search data
When your host employer drafts the DS-7002 Training Plan, the role's responsibilities and skill benchmarks should map to the security engineering occupation wage level on the OFLC Wage Search. Misalignment between the plan and prevailing-wage data can cause the designated sponsor to reject the arrangement.
Confirm your host's familiarity with DS-7002 obligations
Ask directly whether the employer has hosted J-1 Trainees before and whether they understand the DS-7002 supervision and evaluation schedule. Hosts unfamiliar with mid-program reporting requirements create compliance gaps that USCIS and the designated sponsor flag during oversight reviews.

Find Security Software Engineer JobsSecurity Software Engineer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Security Software Engineer?
Current students completing a degree in computer science, cybersecurity, or a related field typically qualify under the J-1 Intern category. Professionals who have graduated within the past year or who hold prior work experience in security engineering generally apply under the Trainee category. Research-focused roles at universities or national labs may qualify under the Research Scholar category instead.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a security engineering role?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. Organizations like Cultural Vistas or AIPT issue the DS-2019 form, approve the DS-7002 Training Plan, and monitor your program compliance. Your employer is the host organization that supervises your day-to-day work and signs the training plan alongside the designated sponsor.
How do I find Security Software Engineer roles that work with J-1 sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Security Software Engineer positions at U.S. employers who have experience hosting J-1 participants. Many cybersecurity teams are open to J-1 arrangements but don't advertise it explicitly, so filtering by sponsorship type on a purpose-built platform surfaces opportunities that standard job boards don't surface reliably.
Can security clearance requirements disqualify J-1 candidates from security engineering roles?
Yes. Roles requiring a U.S. security clearance, such as Secret or Top Secret, are off-limits for J-1 participants who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Focus your search on commercial security engineering positions in cloud security, application security, or penetration testing, where clearance is not a baseline requirement and J-1 host arrangements are more common.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect security software engineers specifically?
It can. J-1 participants whose program is funded by a government, whose home country has a skills shortage that lists security engineering, or who receive government financing may be subject to the two-year requirement under INA Section 212(e). Your designated sponsor determines whether the requirement applies before issuing the DS-2019, so raise this question before accepting any offer.
