Document your SDET skill progression formally
Your DS-2019 training plan must map your test automation, CI/CD pipeline, and quality engineering skills to specific learning objectives. Vague descriptions get rejected, so outline measurable competencies tied to each phase of your placement.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee program eligibility
The Intern category requires current enrollment in a degree program outside the U.S. The Trainee category applies if you've graduated within the past year or have five or more years of professional SDET experience. Applying under the wrong category delays your DS-2019 issuance.
Search host employers using Migrate Mate
Filter by software quality engineering and test infrastructure roles on Migrate Mate to find U.S. employers whose host agreements and training program structures align with J-1 Trainee or Intern requirements before you reach out.
Target employers with established test engineering teams
Host organizations without a dedicated SDET function struggle to satisfy the structured training requirement. Prioritize companies where test automation is a recognized discipline, not a secondary duty folded into general software development.
Confirm your host employer will sign the training plan
Your designated sponsor, not your employer, issues the DS-2019, but your host must co-sign the required training plan. Get written commitment from your hiring manager before the designated sponsor begins processing your application.
Plan for the two-year home residency requirement
If your home country is on the Exchange Visitor Skills List or your placement is government-funded, you must return home for two years before applying for an H-1B or green card. Verify your eligibility with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.

Find Senior Software Development Engineer In Test JobsSenior Software Development Engineer In Test J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers Senior Software Development Engineer in Test roles?
Most SDET placements fall under the Trainee category, which is designed for professionals who have graduated within the past 12 months or have at least five years of relevant field experience. Current students pursuing a degree in computer science or a related discipline may qualify under the Intern category instead. Your designated sponsor confirms which category fits your profile before issuing the DS-2019.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for an SDET position?
Your J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as IIE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT. That organization issues your DS-2019 form and oversees program compliance. Your host employer, the company where you work and train, is not the visa sponsor. The employer signs the training plan but does not hold the sponsoring designation.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 SDET trainees?
Use Migrate Mate to search software quality and test engineering roles at U.S. companies that align with J-1 host requirements. Not every employer advertising SDET roles has an active host organization agreement with a designated sponsor, so filtering for J-1-compatible opportunities early saves you significant time in the outreach process.
What must the training plan include for an SDET J-1 placement?
The required training plan, often called a DS-7002, must detail the specific test automation frameworks, programming languages, and quality assurance methodologies you'll develop at each stage of your placement. Generic descriptions such as 'learn software testing' are insufficient. Your host employer writes the plan, your designated sponsor reviews it, and both parties must sign it before the DS-2019 is issued.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to SDET trainees?
It applies in specific circumstances: if your home country appears on the Department of State Exchange Visitor Skills List for software-related occupations, or if your exchange program receives U.S. government or home-country government funding. If the requirement applies, you cannot change to H-1B status or apply for a green card until you've returned home for two years, unless you obtain a waiver. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before signing an offer.
