Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Game Designer
Document your game design portfolio rigorously
Your DS-2019 training plan requires evidence of structured skill development, not just employment. Compile shipped titles, design documents, prototypes, and GDD samples that demonstrate progression across disciplines like systems design, level design, or UX.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee program eligibility
If you're currently enrolled in a degree program, the J-1 Intern category applies. If you've graduated within the past 12 months or have relevant professional experience, the Trainee category fits. Applying under the wrong category triggers DS-2019 rejection.
Target studios with established exchange visitor history
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. game studios and interactive media companies whose roles align with J-1 sponsorship pathways. Prioritize hosts that have structured onboarding, since designated sponsors require a formal training plan from the host.
Verify your role meets specialty occupation standards
Check the O*NET profile for Game Designer to confirm your specific duties align with the occupation's defined tasks. Designated sponsors use this during DS-2019 review to validate that the training objectives match a legitimate game design function.
Clarify the 2-year home residency requirement early
Some J-1 participants are subject to a two-year home-country residency requirement after their program ends, based on government funding or skills-list status. Resolve this before accepting an offer, as it affects your ability to change status or apply for H-1B later.
Coordinate training plan details with your host before sponsor submission
The designated sponsor, not your host employer, issues the DS-2019, but the sponsor submits the training plan your host provides. Align on specific design milestones, software tools, and mentorship structure with your host before the sponsor reviews the application.

Find Game Designer JobsGame Designer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Game Designer role?
It depends on your career stage. Current university students pursuing game design or related fields typically qualify under the J-1 Intern category. Recent graduates or professionals with documented game design experience up to 12 months post-graduation generally qualify under the Trainee category. Both require a structured training plan and a U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor organization to issue the DS-2019.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Game Designer position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization such as Cultural Vistas, CIEE, or AIPT. These organizations issue the DS-2019 form, review your training plan, and monitor compliance throughout the program. The game studio or company where you work is the host employer, not the visa sponsor. Understanding this distinction is critical when evaluating job offers.
How do I find U.S. game studios that work with J-1 exchange visitors?
Migrate Mate lets you search for game design roles at U.S. employers whose hiring patterns align with J-1 sponsorship pathways. Focus on studios with structured internship or training programs, since designated sponsors require formal training plans from host employers. A host willing to complete that documentation is a strong indicator of J-1 compatibility.
Does the 2-year home residency requirement apply to Game Designers on J-1?
It depends on your funding source and your home country's exchange visitor skills list. If your J-1 program is funded by a U.S. or foreign government, or if your occupation appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List for your country, you're subject to the two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e). Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before signing an offer.
Can a J-1 Game Designer transition to H-1B or another work visa afterward?
Yes, if you are not subject to the two-year home residency requirement or have obtained a waiver. J-1 Trainees and Interns who complete their program without a 212(e) obligation can apply for a change of status to H-1B or pursue consular processing for another visa category. Confirm your 212(e) status with USCIS and your designated sponsor well before your program end date.
