INTRODUCTION
Design @ Zuora For over 15 years, Zuora has led the way in subscription management. Our platform has evolved through multiple technology stacks and acquisitions, which means there’s incredible diversity in our application—and also a tremendous opportunity to unify and elevate our UX standards.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a UX Research Intern
Align your portfolio to specialty occupation criteria
J-1 Intern eligibility requires that your coursework or recent degree directly relates to UX research. Document how your academic training maps to user testing, usability analysis, or human-computer interaction before approaching host employers.
Confirm your host employer meets DS-2019 requirements
Your host organization must agree to a structured training plan, provide direct supervision, and cooperate with your designated sponsor's compliance checks. Ask recruiters explicitly whether they've hosted J-1 interns before and can sign a training plan.
Search Migrate Mate to find employers open to J-1 interns
Filter by UX research roles and use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers who have a track record of hosting international interns, saving time you'd otherwise spend cold-contacting companies unfamiliar with the J-1 host process.
Draft a training plan before your sponsor application
Designated sponsors such as CIEE or Cultural Vistas require a detailed internship training plan outlining learning objectives, supervision structure, and weekly activities. Having a draft ready accelerates DS-2019 issuance and signals host employer cooperation.
Time your offer acceptance around program duration limits
The J-1 Intern category caps program length at 12 months. If your target role is a two-semester rotation spanning more than a year, negotiate the scope with your host employer before your designated sponsor finalizes enrollment.
Clarify the two-year home residency rule with your sponsor
Some J-1 participants are subject to a two-year home country return requirement, which affects post-internship visa options including H-1B and green card pathways. Confirm with your designated sponsor whether your funding source or nationality triggers this requirement.

Find UX Research Intern JobsUX Research Intern J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to UX research internships?
The J-1 Intern category covers current post-secondary students and individuals who graduated within the past 12 months. UX Research Intern roles fit this category when the work directly relates to your field of study. If you've been working in UX research for over a year since graduation, the J-1 Trainee category may apply instead, though it requires demonstrating prior professional experience beyond your degree.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for a UX research internship?
Your visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your host employer. Organizations such as IIE, CIEE, Cultural Vistas, and AIPT administer the J-1 program, issue your DS-2019 form, and monitor compliance throughout your internship. The company where you do UX research is your host, responsible for your day-to-day work and for signing the training plan your designated sponsor requires.
How do I find UX research roles where the host employer is already familiar with the J-1 process?
Migrate Mate lets you search U.S. employer roles filtered by visa-friendly experience, helping you identify host organizations that have worked with international interns before. Targeting employers already familiar with J-1 host requirements, training plan documentation, and designated sponsor coordination significantly shortens the time from offer to program enrollment.
Can I extend my J-1 internship if my UX research project isn't finished?
Extensions within the 12-month Intern category limit are possible, but they require your designated sponsor to issue an amended DS-2019 and your host employer to update the training plan. You must request this before your current DS-2019 expires. Extensions beyond 12 months are not permitted under the Intern category, so if your project requires more time, discuss a transition to a different visa status with your sponsor early.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect UX research interns?
It can, depending on your nationality and the funding source for your internship. If your host employer or academic institution receives U.S. government funding, or if your home country appears on a specific skills shortage list, you may be subject to the requirement under INA Section 212(e). This means you'd need to return home for two years before changing to certain other visa statuses. Your designated sponsor can confirm whether this applies to your specific situation.
