Document your research leadership credentials thoroughly
Research Scholar and Specialist categories require demonstrated expertise beyond a degree. Compile publications, conference presentations, usability study reports, and evidence of team leadership to satisfy your designated sponsor's eligibility review before they issue your DS-2019.
Identify host employers with existing sponsor relationships
Not every U.S. company knows how to engage a designated J-1 sponsor. Target research-heavy organizations, universities with industry labs, and tech firms with established international exchange programs, since their HR teams already understand the host-employer role.
Search for J-1 aligned roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find UX Research Manager positions at U.S. employers open to international candidates. Filtering by visa type surfaces host organizations already familiar with exchange visitor requirements, saving you outreach to employers who aren't set up for J-1.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement early
Research Scholar and Specialist J-1 holders are frequently subject to the two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e), which affects later H-1B or green card eligibility. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before accepting any host employer offer.
Negotiate a training plan that maps to UX research tasks
Your designated sponsor requires a detailed training plan tied to your actual responsibilities. Specify methods like usability testing, interview facilitation, synthesis sessions, and stakeholder reporting so the plan reflects genuine skill development, not a generic job description.
Verify your host employer can meet wage requirements
Your host employer must pay you at a level consistent with similarly situated U.S. workers. Cross-reference the UX Research Manager O*NET occupation profile and OFLC Wage Search to confirm the offered compensation meets the prevailing wage for the role's location and level.

Find UX Research Manager JobsUX Research Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a UX Research Manager role?
Most experienced UX Research Managers qualify under the Research Scholar or Specialist category. Research Scholar applies if your work advances knowledge in a recognized field, while Specialist suits professionals with expertise in a narrowly defined occupational area. Current students or recent graduates completing structured programs may instead qualify under the Intern or Trainee category, depending on their degree status and time since graduation.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a UX Research Manager?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your hiring employer. Organizations like IIE, Cultural Vistas, and CIEE issue the DS-2019 form and oversee your compliance. Your hiring company functions as the host employer and must coordinate with the designated sponsor, but the sponsor holds legal responsibility for the exchange program.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 UX Research Manager?
Use Migrate Mate to search for UX Research Manager roles at employers familiar with international candidates and exchange visitor programs. Many companies in tech, consulting, and academic research have hosted J-1 exchange visitors before, making them faster to work with since they understand what coordinating with a designated sponsor requires.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to UX researchers on J-1?
It can. Research Scholar and Specialist J-1 holders are frequently subject to the two-year home residency requirement under Section 212(e) of the Immigration and Nationality Act if their program was government-funded or involves skills on the Exchange Visitor Skills List. This requirement blocks switching to H-1B or applying for a green card until it is fulfilled or waived, so confirm your status with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
Can a J-1 UX Research Manager work for multiple host employers?
No. The J-1 visa ties you to the specific host employer named on your DS-2019 and training plan. Any change in employer requires your designated sponsor to amend or reissue the DS-2019 before you begin work at a new location. Unauthorized work at a different host constitutes a program violation and jeopardizes your status.
