UX Product Design roles in the U.S. are typically available to exchange visitors under the J-1 Trainee or Intern category, depending on your career stage. Positions span tech, consulting, and product-led companies. Securing J-1 sponsorship requires a designated sponsor organization to issue your DS-2019 before you can join a host employer.

Research has shown that women & underrepresented minorities are more likely to read lists of requirements and consider themselves unqualified if they don't meet every single one. This list represents what we’re ideally looking for, but everyone has unique strengths & weaknesses, and we hire for strength & potential, not lack of weakness.
Use of artificial intelligence or a LLM such as ChatGPT during the interview process will be grounds for rejection of your application process.

Document your design portfolio for sponsor review
Designated sponsors like Cultural Vistas or AIPT require a training plan that maps your portfolio projects to measurable learning objectives. Organize case studies by skill gap, not just deliverables, so the training plan justifies your program category.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee category early
If you're currently enrolled in a design degree program, the J-1 Intern category applies. If you graduated within the past 12 months, Trainee is the correct category. Applying under the wrong category triggers delays that can push back your start date by weeks.
Search Migrate Mate to find host employers
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. companies actively hosting J-1 exchange visitors in product and design roles. Filtering by role type surfaces employers already familiar with the DS-2019 process, which shortens the onboarding conversation significantly.
Confirm the host employer can sign a training plan
Not every design team has HR capacity to co-sign a J-1 training plan and supervise it. Before accepting an offer, ask directly whether the employer has hosted J-1 Trainees before and whether they have a point of contact experienced with sponsor compliance requirements.
Check the 2-year home residency requirement early
Some J-1 participants in government-funded or skills-shortage fields are subject to a 2-year home residency requirement before switching to an H-1B or green card. Confirm with your designated sponsor whether your specific program and funding source triggers this condition.
Align your training plan with UX competency frameworks
Sponsors evaluate training plans against recognized professional standards. Reference O*NET's UX Designer occupation profile when drafting objectives. Framing each phase around skill acquisition, user research methods, or prototyping workflows gives reviewers concrete benchmarks to approve.

Find UX Product Design JobsUX Product Design J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to UX Product Design roles?
It depends on where you are in your career. If you're currently enrolled in a design-related degree program, the J-1 Intern category covers internships directly related to your field of study. If you've graduated within the past 12 months, the J-1 Trainee category applies. Both require a designated sponsor to issue your DS-2019 and a host employer to co-sign a structured training plan.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa, the employer or a separate organization?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the hiring employer. Organizations like Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or IIE issue your DS-2019 form and are legally responsible for your program compliance. The employer where you work is called the host organization. Both parties sign your training plan, but only the designated sponsor can authorize your J-1 status.
How do I find U.S. companies open to hosting J-1 exchange visitors in design roles?
Most design teams don't advertise J-1 compatibility in job postings, so standard searches often miss them. Migrate Mate lets you filter roles and companies by visa sponsorship type, surfacing employers already familiar with the DS-2019 and training plan process. This narrows your outreach to hosts who won't need extensive education on J-1 program requirements before extending an offer.
Can I work on a full product team or am I limited to specific tasks under J-1?
Your scope is defined by the training plan your designated sponsor and host employer co-sign before your program begins. For UX Product Design, training plans commonly cover user research, wireframing, prototyping, and design system work. You can participate in cross-functional sprints and ship real product work, but your activities must align with the learning objectives documented in that plan.
Does the 2-year home residency requirement affect UX designers on J-1?
It can, depending on your funding source and country. If your J-1 program is funded by your home government or the U.S. government, or if your field appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List for your country, you may be required to return home for two years before changing to H-1B or permanent resident status. Confirm this with your designated sponsor before signing any training plan or accepting a host employer offer.
