Document your research portfolio before applying
Compile published studies, usability test reports, and annotated research artifacts before outreach begins. Designated sponsors evaluating Research Scholar applications want evidence of ongoing scholarly work, not just job titles on a resume.
Distinguish Trainee from Research Scholar eligibility
Trainee category fits UX Researchers within five years of graduation or with under one year of U.S. experience. Research Scholar applies to career academics and institutional researchers. Applying under the wrong category will delay your DS-2019 issuance.
Target host employers with dedicated UX research teams
Product companies that run continuous discovery cycles hire UX Researchers with structured programs that align with Trainee or Research Scholar training plans. Use Migrate Mate to filter for roles at employers whose hiring history reflects J-1-compatible research positions.
Verify your host employer can execute a training plan
J-1 Trainee sponsorship requires a signed DS-7002 training plan outlining specific learning objectives and supervision structure. Confirm with your prospective host that their HR or legal team has experience completing this document before you accept an offer.
Check whether your role triggers the home residency requirement
UX Researchers sponsored by certain government funding sources or whose home country is on the Exchange Visitor Skills List may face a two-year home residency requirement after program completion. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before negotiating start dates.
Benchmark your offered wage against OFLC Wage Search data
Your designated sponsor will confirm your host employer meets prevailing wage standards during DS-2019 processing. Cross-check your offered compensation against OFLC Wage Search using the O*NET code for User Experience Researchers before signing an offer letter.

Find UX Researcher JobsUX Researcher J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a UX Researcher role?
It depends on where you are in your career. Current students completing a degree in HCI, psychology, or a related field typically qualify under the Intern category. Early-career professionals within five years of graduation apply under Trainee. Academics conducting user research at a university or research institute qualify under Research Scholar. The host employer's structure and your credentials together determine which category your designated sponsor will approve.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a UX Researcher?
Your visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. Organizations like IIE, Cultural Vistas, and AIPT issue the DS-2019 form that authorizes your exchange visitor status. The company where you conduct research is your host employer. They direct your work but do not hold the legal sponsorship role. Your designated sponsor monitors your program compliance throughout your stay.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 UX Researchers?
Most job postings don't advertise J-1 compatibility explicitly, which makes filtering difficult through general searches. Migrate Mate surfaces UX Researcher roles at employers whose hiring patterns align with exchange visitor sponsorship, so you can focus outreach on hosts likely to support the DS-2019 process rather than discovering eligibility late in negotiations.
What does the DS-7002 training plan require for a UX Researcher position?
The DS-7002 is a structured document your host employer and designated sponsor co-sign. For UX Researcher roles, it must specify the research methods you'll practice, the tools and software involved, your supervision arrangement, and measurable learning objectives by phase. Host employers unfamiliar with J-1 Trainee requirements sometimes underestimate how detailed this document needs to be, so confirm early that your HR contact has completed one before.
Can a J-1 UX Researcher change host employers mid-program?
Changing host employers during an active J-1 program requires your designated sponsor's approval and typically a new or amended DS-2019. The new host must meet the same eligibility standards as the original, including a revised DS-7002 for Trainee programs. Your program category, remaining authorized duration, and the designated sponsor's internal policies all affect whether a transfer is feasible without restarting the application process.
