Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Insurance Broker
Document your insurance credentials before applying
Gather transcripts, professional certifications, and any home-country insurance licensing records before outreach. J-1 Trainee programs require evidence that your prior education or experience directly relates to the insurance or financial services field.
Target brokerages that regularly host exchange visitors
Search for insurance employers who have structured training plans in place, not just open roles. Brokerages with formal onboarding programs are far more likely to coordinate with a designated sponsor to issue your DS-2019.
Use Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned insurance roles
Filter your search on Migrate Mate by employer type and sponsorship history to surface brokerages and agencies actively hosting exchange visitors, saving you from manually vetting hundreds of insurance job postings.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement early
Insurance Trainee participants from certain countries, or those funded by their home government, may face a two-year home-country residency requirement after the program ends. Confirm your status with the designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
Align your DS-7002 training plan to insurance tasks
The DS-7002 training plan must map your daily duties to measurable insurance skills, such as policy analysis, client risk assessment, or underwriting review. Vague plans citing only general business tasks are routinely rejected by designated sponsors.
Confirm host employer eligibility before signing
Not every brokerage can serve as a J-1 host. The employer must agree to designated sponsor oversight, including site visits and progress reporting. Get written confirmation from both the brokerage and your sponsor organization before giving notice at a current role.

Find Insurance Broker JobsInsurance Broker J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an Insurance Broker role?
It depends on your career stage. If you're currently enrolled in a university degree program, the Intern category applies and covers structured work tied to your field of study. If you've already completed your degree or have equivalent professional experience, the Trainee category is the correct fit. Both require a DS-7002 training plan outlining specific insurance-related learning objectives.
Does the brokerage or agency sponsor my J-1 visa?
The brokerage where you work is your host employer, not your visa sponsor. Your J-1 sponsorship comes from a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, that reviews your training plan, issues the DS-2019, and monitors your program compliance. The host employer and the designated sponsor are two separate entities with distinct legal roles.
How do I find insurance employers willing to host J-1 exchange visitors?
Most insurance job postings don't advertise J-1 hosting explicitly. Migrate Mate lets you search for employers and roles that align with J-1 sponsorship, so you can identify brokerages and agencies already familiar with exchange visitor programs rather than cold-pitching employers who have no prior experience with the process.
Can I get a state insurance license while on J-1 status?
Most U.S. states require a valid Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number to sit for a property and casualty or life insurance licensing exam. J-1 exchange visitors are eligible to apply for an SSN through the Social Security Administration after arrival. Confirm your state's specific licensing requirements before your program start date, as some states impose additional residency conditions.
What happens to my J-1 status if the host brokerage closes or lets me go?
Your J-1 status is tied to your designated sponsor, not to the specific host employer. If the brokerage terminates the arrangement, you must notify your sponsor immediately. The sponsor can authorize a transfer to a new qualifying host employer within the program period. Failing to notify the sponsor and continuing to work without authorization puts your status at risk.
