Align your culinary credentials with program requirements
Intern status requires current enrollment or graduation within the past 12 months from a culinary program. Trainee status fits candidates with a culinary degree plus one year of experience, or five years of professional kitchen experience without a degree.
Build a training plan before approaching host employers
Your designated sponsor requires a formal training plan detailing the kitchen stations, techniques, and skills you'll develop. Drafting this document in advance signals to host restaurants that you understand J-1 compliance obligations and speeds up the DS-2019 issuance process.
Target hotels and resort groups with established J-1 programs
Large hospitality groups and resort kitchens frequently host J-1 trainees because their HR teams already understand the DS-2019 process and training plan requirements. Use Migrate Mate to filter for Line Cook roles at employers with J-1 hosting history.
Confirm host employer E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer
J-1 hosts must verify your work authorization. Ask prospective employers whether they are enrolled in E-Verify before signing any offer letter, since unenrolled hosts create compliance gaps that can delay or void your training placement.
Negotiate the training plan scope during the offer stage
The training plan is a legally binding document, so negotiate rotation schedules, station assignments, and supervision hours before your designated sponsor countersigns. Changes after DS-2019 issuance require sponsor approval and can disrupt your start date.
Check the two-year home residency requirement before applying
Candidates from certain countries or with government-funded training may be subject to a two-year home residency requirement after their J-1 program ends. Confirm your country's status with your designated sponsor early, since this affects future U.S. visa eligibility.

Find Line Cook JobsLine Cook J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers Line Cook positions?
Most Line Cook placements fall under the Intern or Trainee category. Intern applies if you are currently enrolled in a culinary or hospitality program, or graduated within the past 12 months. Trainee applies if you hold a culinary degree with at least one year of post-degree kitchen experience, or have five or more years of progressive professional kitchen experience without a degree.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa, my host restaurant or a separate organization?
Your J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your host restaurant. Organizations such as Cultural Vistas, CIEE, or AIPT issue the DS-2019 form and monitor your training program for compliance. Your host restaurant is the employer where you train, but it holds a different role from the designated sponsor in the J-1 structure.
How do I find Line Cook host employers that are familiar with the J-1 Trainee process?
Search on Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers posting Line Cook roles that align with J-1 sponsorship. Targeting hotels, resort properties, and multi-unit restaurant groups tends to yield hosts with existing J-1 compliance infrastructure, which shortens the setup time between your offer letter and DS-2019 issuance.
Can I work any station in the kitchen during my J-1 Trainee placement?
You can only work stations and perform tasks listed in your approved training plan. The training plan, countersigned by your designated sponsor, defines your rotation schedule and permitted duties. Working outside those boundaries puts both you and your host employer out of compliance with J-1 program regulations and can result in termination of your DS-2019.
What happens if my host restaurant closes or fires me during my J-1 program?
If your host employer relationship ends early, you must notify your designated sponsor immediately. You have a short grace period, typically 30 days, to find a replacement host or transfer to a new J-1 program before your status is considered terminated. Your designated sponsor, not USCIS, manages the transfer process and must approve any new host placement.
