Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Technical Project Manager
Frame your training plan around PM methodologies
Your DS-2019 requires a detailed training plan tied to specific skills you can't access at home. Document proficiency gaps in Agile, Scrum, or PMP frameworks and align each phase to measurable project deliverables your host employer can verify.
Target host employers with existing J-1 infrastructure
Companies that have hosted J-1 Trainees before already understand the DS-2019 process and the sponsor organization's compliance requirements. Use Migrate Mate to filter for Technical Project Manager roles at employers with J-1 sponsorship history.
Check whether your role triggers the two-year requirement
The home-country physical presence requirement applies to J-1 holders funded by their home government or whose skills appear on the Exchange Visitor Skills List. Confirm your country's status with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
Distinguish the Trainee category from the Specialist category
Trainee status fits professionals within five years of graduation or initial employment. If you have more than five years of project management experience, you'll likely need the Specialist category, which requires demonstrating expertise unavailable in the U.S. workforce.
Confirm the host employer will sign your training plan
The designated sponsor, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, issues the DS-2019, but the host employer must co-sign the structured training plan. Get written confirmation from the hiring manager before the sponsor submits your paperwork to the State Department.
Use O*NET to validate your occupation classification
Sponsors and host employers use O*NET occupation codes to classify your Technical Project Manager role in the training plan. Verify that the O*NET code reflects your actual duties so the DS-2019 accurately represents the skills you're developing.

Find Technical Project Manager JobsTechnical Project Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Technical Project Manager role?
Most Technical Project Managers qualify under the Trainee or Specialist category. Trainee applies if you're within five years of graduation or early employment and your training plan develops skills unavailable at home. Specialist applies when you have deep, specialized expertise in project management that the host organization specifically needs and can document.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa, the employer or a separate organization?
A U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor organization, such as Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or IIE, issues your DS-2019 and serves as the official J-1 sponsor. Your hiring employer is the host organization. The host directs your work and signs your training plan, but the designated sponsor holds legal responsibility for your visa status and compliance.
How do I find Technical Project Manager host employers open to J-1 arrangements?
Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point for identifying U.S. employers and open roles that align with J-1 Trainee or Specialist sponsorship. Many companies that host J-1 exchange visitors already understand the training plan requirements, which significantly reduces back-and-forth during the offer stage.
What does the J-1 training plan need to include for a project management position?
The training plan must outline specific competencies you'll develop, the phases of training tied to real project milestones, the supervision structure, and how each phase maps to skills unavailable in your home country. Vague plans that simply describe normal job duties are rejected by designated sponsors during DS-2019 review.
Can a Technical Project Manager on J-1 status switch host employers mid-program?
Changing host employers requires your designated sponsor's approval and typically means filing an amended or new DS-2019. The new host must agree to the original or revised training plan and meet the sponsor's compliance standards. Your program category, remaining program duration, and the reason for the change all factor into whether the sponsor will approve the transfer.
